ResearchI have pursued research that integrates ecology with physical river science (fluvial geomorphology) within the context of river restoration, conservation and human use. Focused on a native plant species that grows within rivers and appears to be re-shaping previously degraded rivers in ways that create complex habitat for salmon. Worked within an interdisciplinary group of land managers from agencies, tribes and non-profits as well as scientists and social scientists focused on the restoration of the Middle Fork John Day, a river that historically had large salmon runs, was degraded and now... At Ecotrust, I had the privilege of working with a diverse set of programs.State of the Salmon. Helped build “big picture” of salmon distribution patterns and trends across the North Pacific, including a first ever IUCN Redlist assessment of a Pacific salmon (Sockeye). Forest Carbon. Built process for assessing carbon credits on private lands in Pacific Northwest. Collaborated with Sustainable Harvest coffee on pilot project for carbon trades on farms in Brazil.Forestry 2100. Modeled forest growth, landscape patterns and economic outcomes of alternative management scenarios ("sustainable" vs. "business as usual") across the Pacific Northwest. Copper River program. Created a map-based educational CD about the Copper River basin, Alaska. Built intrinsic potential model of streams for juvenile salmon species.

I supported the efforts of Technical Recovery Teams conducting historic population analyses and coordinating recovery of salmon and steelhead in California under the Endangered Species Act. Developed intrinsic potential models of streams for juvenile salmon habitat. Created and managed geographic data including historic distribution of salmon and integrated database of dams.
