Building scientific instruments and launching them into space would be a satisfying career for some. It was for me for the better part of 5 years, until, I bought my first house. Before long, I found myself coming home from work, sketching design ideas, then putting on a tool belt to realize them. An enlightened friend, having taken note of my new hobby, suggested I take a look at a book called Case Study Houses. That was it for me. I had found my real passion. I started taking night classes in drafting and sitting in on architecture lectures during my lunch hour. In a couple of years I managed to put together enough creative work to get into the M.Arch program at SCI-Arc. Fast forward to today, and I am 10 years into a rewarding career in architecture and construction. In those 10 years, I have developed the skills, knowledge, and mind set to lead building projects of various scales from inception to completion. For instance, I have traveled throughout China meeting with town councils, developers, and investors to help them visualize their development goals . I've had the pleasure of thinking about how a young person's experience of their school environment shapes who they will become and turning those thoughts into drawings, physical models, and renderings. I've built gallery exhibitions on short timelines, both as the person receiving direction from others and as the one giving them. Most recently, I've managed a team of exceptionally talented individuals designing and building a hillside residence that is now happily occupied by a family. If you can't find me on a construction site, or sitting in front of a computer designing something, I'm either hanging out with my wife, hiking with our dog Ranger, working on our house, reading or playing guitar.
