In a working world that seems to be constantly pushing toward specialization, I proudly wear the flag of a generalist. Why? Because generalists are attuned to the fact that they’ll need to be prepared to flex, question, analyze and learn — skills that every team needs.Discovery is at the heart of what I do best. Curiosity is my superpower. I’m constantly looking forward to what’s coming next. I’m not willing to sit on the knowledge that I or my team has and hope that it is enough. I’m looking for the next thing to learn to round out my team more fully, to contribute wherever I can and to help us deliver on our effort. While we’re on that work path, I’m trying to gather context and data to help us in the next iteration while keeping an eye on the bigger picture for what comes next. The product of that work can be a software application, a story, a process, a tool, a workflow, course work or any number of other applications. The goal remains the same, to build a team, set a strategy, move them to a tactical map, execute, deliver and have a good time while getting there.I try to follow a path where I examine ideas, value diverse teammates, build mutual respect, foster learning and communication. I’ve never entered a job where I was the perfect fit, but I’m always open and dedicated to finding ways to make the fit better, the work more enjoyable and the outcomes more successful.Here’s a short list of things that I’m always interested in talking about. Senior Newsroom Operations Analyst
The change indicated here was mostly a title change. It didn't represent a change to day-to-day responsibilities of my job at The Times. Major accomplishments during this phase was using performance-driven-change methodologies to move a Times newsroom of nearly 200 journalists from a print-first operation to a 96 percent digital-first operation. The move maintained content output and journalist quality while the newsroom staffing numbers decreased. Included in that was the launch of a proprietary, API-based, state-of-the-art journalistic planning tool. This also completed the goal of having a newsroom tooled so that all applications necessary for print and digital production were entirely cloud-based and available for remote use and news production before it was made necessary by Covid in 2020.

Senior Producer For Operations
While not reflected in the title, in practice, this role was a Product Management role. I handled the newsroom roadmap, backlog tracking, workflow development, tool development, prioritization, key metric identification and tracking for newsroom digital tools. I stayed in close communication with top-level management in the newsroom and worked across the organization including regular updates with Product Management, IT and DevOps groups. I worked at the sprint planning level with developers in both of the groups including on the Design and QA portions of Development teams. I also took a variety of roles in different segments of project management.Major accomplishments during this role included requirements, development, testing and training of a new print CMS, a new digital content CMS, and numerous new digital tools, workflows and processes.

Diversity is an important part of The Seattle Times mission. The Seattle Times Diversity Committee works to assure and improve our diversity in thought and practice across all aspects of our landscape from the way we staff to the stories we cover — including race, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, socio-economic and geographic background.Accomplishments while committee co-chair included parting with the UW to conduct a highly-successful audit of The Times content. Also partnered with the UW, the City of Seattle and Seattle Center to help produce community diversity discussions and activities around the 2013 RACE Project.

I managed and scheduled the team that handled the day-to-day curation and editing of seattletimes.com and The Times social media presence. I created and trained a breaking news toolset and workflow that culminated in two Pulitzer Prizes for Breaking News Reporting at The Times. I was the initial Times employee and Times producer, the Lead Producer, the homepage producer and in charge of assignments, site design and editing for the digital package that won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News.
