About Matthew Jones
I am a crop modeller currently specialising in a crop science-related research at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands. My original training was in Computer Science and Economics, and I have enjoyed the challenge of developing my knowledge and skills in biophysical systems modelling and data analysis over the last 20 years. This work covers a range of activities including field experimentation, desktop research, data analysis and management, algorithm development and verification, software development and testing, scientific and popular writing and presentations to different groups of stakeholders, and addresses research themes around climate change impacts and adaptations, productivity (yield) trends, genotypic effects, point-to-region modelling, and applied decision support system development. I hold a PhD in Agronomy, and an MSc in Agro-meteorology. My current work focusses on cocoa production, analysing yield gaps and developing a management decision support-oriented cocoa crop model. In the past I worked at the South African Sugarcane Research Institute in Mt Edgecombe, South Africa, and Cambridge University in the UK.
