Based in Japan, SPARX Group Co., Ltd. and its affiliates (“SPARX”) has grown into one of Asia's largest independent asset managers and currently offers a wide array of investment strategies targeting markets throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Matt is a member of the SPARX Mirai Creation team, a VC investor dedicated to backing the next generation of innovative, global companies focused on intelligent technologies, robotics, technologies related to carbon neutrality, including hydrogen, electrification, and new materials. He is responsible for conducting diligence on new potential investments, work with team and coordinate with seed LPs (Toyota Motor and SMBC) to shepherd deals from sourcing to diligence to closing, and work closely with portfolio companies to deliver value at the board and operational level.Additionally, Matt continues to support SPARX’s founder on various projects to investigate new business opportunities and strengthen existing ones.

Patrol Capital entered into a partnership with U.S.-based Fort Washington Investment Advisors, Inc., a $50 billion AUM asset manager, to create its Asia-based hedge fund platform starting with a $100 million discretionary global macro hedge fund.- Assisted with the build out of the firm’s corporate and fund infrastructure and operations, including recruitment and hiring efforts, selection and management of relationships across trading counterparties, and both corporate and fund service vendors.- Responsible for the oversight of regulatory, compliance, administrative, client service and various corporate affairs for Patrol Capital’s group of companies in the Cayman Islands, Hong Kong and New York.

Institutional Marketing- Managed a team of three product managers that were responsible for all investor relations’ communications and marketing materials for Japanese equities related strategies. - Also, involved in the review of legal documents, negotiations and preparatory activities related to account openings and closings, creating and reviewing all English materials, team training, and new business development activities.

- Chosen by firm’s founder to be the first non-native Japanese speaker to head a subsidiary. Overall responsibility for North America business, including supervision of broker/dealer and general partnership with U.S.’s largest public pension system (CalPERS).- Transformed 15-person office into a marketing group from a corporate and fund administration support office. Reviewed and analyzed every aspect of business operations and achieved the following: simplified organizational structure through elimination of departments and managerial positions, introduced quarterly budget and compliance reviews, and reduced fixed costs by more than 25% by taking measures such as consolidating number of service providers and sub-leasing unused office space. - Envisioned and developed a new business called SPARX Asia Funds. Created and led team to launch three new Asia-focused mutual funds to broaden marketing opportunities in U.S. Prior to this strategy change, the existing Japanese equities-only business’s future was limited. - Implemented a comprehensive marketing program ranging from a new website to a re-branding initiative to position SPARX as the “Center for Asia Investment Intelligence” in U.S.- Responsible for orderly liquidation of four U.S. entities from 2007 to 2011, including sale of U.S. mutual fund business but assets under management were retained, and shutdown of U.S. operations.

- Concurrent position while President at SPARX Investment & Research, USA, Inc.- Manager of Bermuda-based subsidiary responsible for SPARX’s offshore funds complex, including member of board of directors for all Japanese equities funds, and supervising all external service providers, including fund’s auditor, custodian / administrator, and legal counsel, and corporate auditor and out-sourced accountant.- Led project to successfully consolidate corporate and fund administration-related activities that were previously conducted in New York, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong to one location. This project entailed detailed explanation of current procedures and practices to all parties in each office, identification of current operational and financial risks to overall organization, and development of timeline and specific steps to minimize disruption and streamline the business structure.

- Selected by firm’s founder to create and lead a new team named the Global Initiatives Team in 2006 to develop the first strategic plan to transform the business from a purely Japanese company to a multi-strategy, multi-cultural Asia-based asset management firm. As part of this process, project discussions ranging from operations to marketing between group companies based in Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, New York and London were initiated and overseen by team.

- Supported all non-Japanese activities ranging from IR/PR to non-Japan business development and client services efforts as business grew from $3 billion assets under management to a peak of $20 billion in 2006.- Lead member of SPARX’s efforts to transform its Japanese equities-only business to an Asian asset manager through strategic alliances and acquisitions. Activities included due diligence, negotiations, deal structuring, and post-transaction integration activities.- Led team to establish SPARX’s first non-Japanese partnership with Korean based investment manager, Cosmo Investment Management Co., Ltd.- Played key role in planning, and executing strategic alliance that included purchase of approximately 4.5% shares or $50 million of Daishin Securities, a Korean securities firm.- Led negotiations and completed $226 million acquisition of Asia’s largest alternative investment manager, PMA Capital Management.
