Matt Lerner is a partner at the international law firm of Sidley Austin LLP where he is co-head of the Global Tax Controversy Practice. He represents corporations and high net worth clients in civil tax controversies with the IRS, from audits, through IRS Appeals, to litigation. He also represents companies and individuals in white collar criminal investigations, particularly those involving tax issues. Matt routinely handles complex commercial litigation involving financial instruments and investment strategies. He is particularly adept at working with and cross-examining financial, economic and statistical experts. Matt also provides crisis management direction and advice to companies dealing with publicly-disclosed legal issues that negatively impact their reputation and standing in the community.Matt is a 1985 graduate of Harvard Law School and a 1982 graduate of Amherst College. He is active in Amherst College alumni programs and served as Co-President of the Amherst Association of Washington, D.C., and president of his Amherst class. He previously served for several years as Treasurer of Gifts for the Homeless, a charity that provides new and quality used clothing to the homeless of Washington, D.C., and as a board member of D.C.
