In the summer of 2022 Matthew passed his Masters Degree in Contemporary Crafts at HCA with a Distinction. While Matthew wears three distinct work hats: Artist, Designer and Educator, he blends these skills whilst working with communities, schools and landscape management teams across the UK.Artist and educator: Since 2011, he has been sharing his love for wood-fired cob ovens, engaging with Primary schools and communities nationally. Building a wood-fired cob oven is accessible to all regardless of age or ability. He uses the process as a learning opportunity, connecting us to our soils through creative outdoor play. This leads to discussions around sustainability, history, science, art and global culture. Matthew has engaged, enthused and empowered over 11,000 pupils across the UK. Now, post Masters Degree, Matthew is also delivering Pinch Pot workshops, where children dig for clay soil and create hand-made pots which can be wood-fired in a Cob Oven. This direct connection with the earth is Material Engagement in its purest form, linking us to the world and our ancestral roots in a simple, profound and playful way.Artist and designer: Alongside working with clay, Matthew continues to support his clients with his graphic design skills, developed over 30 years of working in the print and design industry. Working predominantly in the public sector, Matthew relishes designing interpretive graphics, digging deep into natural history, social history, conservation and visitor experiences. Outputs include interpretive panels, walks leaflets and books. Within this activity Matthew produces graphic identities, map and illustrations, and works closely with manufacturers and printers to ensure acurate and consistent deliveries of durable and accessible material.Matthew finds everything interesting. Outside of work projects, he enjoys joining in with a local walking group, building and flying model gliders, and exploring the countryside in his 33 year old camper van. Matthew currently uses an old school building as a base and studio, but equally works from his van while on the road.
