I currently develop tsunami inundation models.My bioinformatics research is in developing statistical and machine learning methods for online Bayesian Phylogenetics. The overall aim is to move phylogenetics into the world of big-data analysis. I'm working on techniques inspired by natural language processing and applying them in bioinformatics.My PhD investigated the physics behind the flow of cohesive granular systems, which are liquid-like but have a rich internal structure. These include diverse flows such as avalanches, pharmaceutical processing, bulk handling and food engineering. Whilst fluid dynamics is a mature field, granular dynamics is just emerging, with fundamental questions on their flowing properties remaining open. Through high-performance computer simulations, my analysis accelerated physically based models of granular dynamics.
