While continuing in my existing role as Collections Delivery Architect, I am currently Acting Head of Digital Research within BDLSS. I lead and support the development and delivery of digital services to support research, teaching and learning activities across the University. I line manage our Digital Projects Manager, all of the developers on the digital projects/digital research team, and the Digital Support and Community Engagement Officer. I continue to manage Digital.Bodleian, and the projects that create, consume, or deliver digitised content.
  • University Of Oxford
    Collections Delivery Architect
University Of Oxford Apr 2015 - Jul 2015

Lead architect and project/service manager on the various Bodleian services that create, consume, or deliver digitisted content. These include Digital.Bodleian, Viewer.Bodleian, and our digitisation workflows. I sit on the senior managers team within BDLSS, on the Technical Architecture Group, on a number of project steering groups or boards, and am the Bodleian's main representative with the IIIF. I manage a number of software developers, and project administrative staff.
  • University Of Oxford
Digitisation Service Manager & Imaging Specialist
University Of Oxford Jul 2012 - Apr 2015
    Bdlss, Bodleian Libraries
Reporting to the Head of Digital Programmes, I managed key digitisation services and project manage a new infrastructure project [Digitisation Foundations] designed to replace the existing digitisation service. I also project managed the Digital.Bodleian project, which is a JISC funded project bringing together most of the Bodleian library’s existing digitised content under a single unified search and discovery service, and migrating our image holdings from the University’s tape store, to a new digital asset management system based around our institutional digital repository. These two projects and the digitisation service between them comprise the major Bodleian work to create new digitised material, and to preserve and transform their existing digitised holdings. I sit on a number of working groups, including the Bodleian Technical Architecture Group and the Digitisation Infrastructure Working Group, and I am on the Technical Committee of the Bodleian’s major partnership project with the Vatican Library. I work with partners at the Vatican, Stanford, the British Library, and elsewhere as part of my work with the IIIF [International Image Interoperability Framework], with Europeana, and as the primary technical expert within BDLSS who deals with all aspects of digitisation and imaging.
  • University Of Oxford
Oxford Digital Library Developer / Imaging Developer
University Of Oxford Jun 2008 - Jul 2012
    Bdlss, Bodleian Libraries
I was responsible for development work on, and the maintenance of, the services associated with the Oxford Digital Library programme. I oversaw the migration of a number of key image archives to the University tape store, significantly expanded our holdings in the Luna Insight content delivery platform, oversaw a major migration of this Luna platform to a new web-platform and away from an unreliable application based platform, and continued to manage and support the digitisation workflow used by Imaging Services.
  • University Of Oxford
    Imaging Systems Developer
University Of Oxford Jan 2006 - Jun 2008
    Imaging Services, Bodleian Libraries
I was the primary developer and system administrator working on the systems used by Imaging Services. I oversaw the move to a new server platform, the introduction of new delivery methods and formats, introduced a new colour-management system to improve image fidelity, replaced number of legacy image processing systems with new or substantially revised versions, kept a number of legacy systems running well past their end of life in order to ensure that production targets could be met, and provided specialist support on image technology to studio staff, and academic/curatorial staff.
  • University Of Oxford
    Lecturer/Tutor In Philosophy
University Of Oxford Jul 2000 - Sep 2007
    Brasenose College, And Others
I was lecturer in philosophy at Brasenose College in 2001/2002, and provided regular tutorial teaching in philosophy to a number of Oxford colleges between 2000 and 2006.
  • Scottish Power / Scottish Telecoms
    Technical Support Manager
Scottish Power / Scottish Telecoms Sep 1996 - Sep 1998
    Glasgow
I managed the technical support service for Scottish Telecom’s internet service provision business. I oversaw the transition from a small team of five supporting just customers of ISPs owned by Scottish Telecom, to a 24-hour service with over thirty staff providing support to customers from over 60 ISPs who had outsourced their technical support to our team. I led the development of a new call and problem tracking system, internal knowledge-base, and customer support system. Working in a large corporate call-centre environment for a utility company, I was responsible for ensuring our team’s performance met service level agreements with our client companies; setting performance indicators for our service, and individual targets for staff; developing statistical methods for allocating staff cover according to times of greatest demand, and all aspects of service/support desk management. I reported to our Operations Manager, and deputised for him on technical issues at meetings with board and executive level staff. I was one of only two members of the junior management team mentored by our Chief Executive under a scheme to prepare staff for more senior management roles.
