Senior Principal Chemical EngineerNachurs Alpine Solutions Aug 2021 - PresentMarion, Ohio, UsLead project development from laboratory and analytical data gathering through pilot and full scale process development. This includes conceptual design, hazard and operability reviews, management of change, costing and implementation, and process commissioning. Assessment of existing processes using applied engineering principles and statistical methods, including process capability and failure analysis. Process simulation using AVEVA/PROII. -
Senior Project EngineerMetss Corporation Jul 2014 - Aug 2021Westerville, Ohio, UsPrincipal investigator for fine chemical production efforts; responsible for evaluation of process chemistry, laboratory and pilot scale experimental design and execution, data processing and results verification, internal and external (toll manufacturing) engineering reports, interfacing between multiple invested parties including individual VCs and other companies, translation of laboratory and pilot scale findings to industrial scale, HAZMAT certified. Design of experiments (DOE) for ballistics tolerant and crashworthy fuel bladders for a government client; performed experimental series to maximize statistical significance of observed trends, managed constructed and ballistic testing of sample materials panels and demonstration fuel bladders, assessed trends in single and covariance between multiple variables to optimize performance. Major contributor on a program to replace chlorinated HAP paint stripping solvents for use with aircraft parts (chromated and non-chromated primers). Utilized multivariate analysis of historical data and designed experiments to fine tune promising candidate solvent and additive blends. Designed and demonstrated a pilot scale system to determine key processing parameters to demonstrate feasibility, reduce solvent losses, and minimize overall cost of operation. Principal investigator for a program to develop a replacement for traditional ballistic backing material used by US government agencies and private companies associated with development and testing of ballistic armor for private and military use. The program relies heavily on formulation activities driven by designed experimental series to arrive at the most promising candidates. In parallel, processing equipment selection, acquisition, and spin up is occurring in anticipation of pilot scale production to generate meaningful test quantities of the ballistic material. The program will culminate in scale up and process optimization to support all customer requirements. -
Research ScientistBattelle Memorial Institute Sep 2010 - Jul 2014Columbus, Ohio, UsProgram manager for threat and vulnerability (risk) analysis for a US government client. Modeling and evaluation of a composite manufacturing process to develop a site profile including likely raw materials, utility, and laboratory services requirements along with likely emissions and heat signatures for remote detection. Developed a novel interface and macro code for computing thermodyamic properties under non-standard conditions. Created a macro code for the import and processing of output data from an irradiated nuclear fuel composition estimation program (SCALE). Performed quality assurance and wrote advanced user-guide text for radiation performance degradation estimating software for informing military decisions in the field. Constructed a novel biological screening tool which was demonstrated before the US Congress. Advised on radiation shielding for various isotopes and masses. Implemented a novel methodology for the treatment of non-ambient feed streams that form the basis of a 3D visualization tool used by a military client. Served on the iC3 C2 steering committee to bolster collaboration between Battelle offices. Task leader in formulating a new modeling concept for simulating notional municipal water distribution systems. Task lead on development of a novel elicitation tool having a utility model approach which was presented at a national risk conference. Performed one-on-one and remote elicitation. Simulated notional chemical processes in ChemCAD and SuperPro to establish associated "fingerprints", programming in various languages to process and format inconsistent data sets, repetitive analysis processes, and other tasks that lend themselves to automation. Participated in explosive dissemination source term analysis for improvised devices and developed an automated image processing technique which currently reduces program costs by over $200,000 annually. Composed reports for release to government clients. -
ResearcherThe Battelle Memorial Institute Aug 2004 - Feb 2006Columbus, Ohio, UsDevelopment of CAE tools for the numerical modeling of composite manufacturing processes. -
Process Engineering InternMarathon Petroleum Company Jun 1999 - Jun 2000Findlay, Ohio, UsSurveyed and optimized cooling water systems in Gas Con, Crude, Vacuum and SCOTT units for the Detroit refinery, constructed electronic PI (process instrumentation) workbook structures and graphics containing live process output values in a graphical interface for use by engineers throughout the company, tested and validated a proprietary code to model coker process dynamics, yield, and product quality.
