Chapter President
As President of the SUNY ESF Chapter of the American Fisheries Society I was the coordinator of events, presentations and workshops. It was my goal to make the chapter a place of learning and preparation for the real world. To reach this goal I worked with other AFS chapters, government organizations, associated collegiate faculty and other student organizations. We've held many workshops designed to teach students proper fisheries techniques, some examples include, electroshocking (both boat and backpack), trap nets, fish culturing and boating workshops. I also was responsible for running and organizing weekly meetings which included a presentation from a professional in the field. Finally, I organized, and collaborated on events such as trips to ESF satellite campuses, student subunit collaborations with SUNY Cobleskill, conference trips and more.
Arsenault Freshwater Ecology Lab
I'm currently conducting independent brook trout research out of the Cranberry Lake Biological Station and also I'm working with other graduate students in the lab with their own Masters research. My research is on Adirondack headwater lake brook trout and involves angling, backpacking and hiking in order to go and gather data. Other parts of my research will involve stable isotope analysis and aging chronometric structures like scales and otoliths.
Fisheries Technician
I got to work with USFWS fisheries biologists with the collection of muskellunge as part of a broodstock collection for the ESF-TIBS stocking program as well as for an acoustic telemetry study (GLATOS). We used Oneida-style traps checked daily to catch the adult musky. These fish were used in an egg/milt take process as part of a stocking effort and released back into the St. Lawrence. Another part of this short-term internship was a lake sturgeon broodstock collection for the NYSDEC using overnight gill nets. The fish were held in tanks temporarily and spawned once all of the fish were verified as both fertile and ready to go. Once all of the fish were spawned they all received acoustic tags as part of an ongoing study monitoring lake sturgeon movements.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
I worked as a fisheries technician with the Onondaga Lake Biomonitoring project with two other undergraduates and three graduate students from SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry. Our work consists of sampling Onondaga Lake using gill-nets, seine-nets and trap-nets in order to gather fish community data as well as representative tissue samples from each of our 11 specific sites. During these monthly nets we would occasionally catch lake sturgeon, every sturgeon caught was outfitted with PIT tag if the individual did not already have one. Lab work included aging pumpkinseed scales by pressing them and aging otoliths from smallmouth bass, walleye, white sucker, shorthead redhorse and common carp. Our work also included a bass tagging project comparing tournament caught versus recreationally caught largemouth bass on Onondaga lake. We tagged largemouth using t-bar fish-tags in our free time as well as after tournaments on the lake.
Lawn Care Crew
While doing lawn care service we mowed lawns using stand on zero turn lawnmowers, we then would weed-whack around areas the mowers cannot reach, then we would clean up the lawn, patio, and driveway using backpack leaf blowers. The goal is to be efficient while maintaining a standard of quality. Other aspects of the job include tool maintenance and customer service.
Educator
As an educator at Penn Dixie I was expected to lead tours, as well as teach customers and lead large school groups. We taught a general overview about the science, ancient history, and modern history of the fossil park. We also taught how to safely use small tools, how to find fossils amongst the rocks and how to identify certain fossils. In addition to working with customers educators also accounted for the general maintenance, sales of merchandise and overall safety of the Penn Dixie site.
