I have been teaching math, in some capacity, for the past 4+ years, most recently as a Math Fellow with Americorps providing individualized instruction and academic support for a small group of high school students in an urban setting.Since I’ve taught math to middle school, high school, and college students, I am frequently asked which age group I like working with best. I truly don’t have a favorite. My favorite is finding ways to engage with and connect to all students. I love the challenge of identifying real life math examples to help students understand, appreciate, and in some cases, love math as much as I do.My electives in college allowed me to use my math skills in a different way and expanded my interest and knowledge in software engineering, data bases, and some programming languages – Python, C and C++.I also dove deeper into the analytics side of math with projects like my sports analytics capstone research. Here, I analyzed football plays using the NFLFastR database in Rstudio to identify statistical trends based on Expected Points Added. I then wrote a 50+ page written thesis, presented the results in class, to faculty and at a community wide research symposium. I do have some Spanish speaking proficiencies, but would need to dust these skills off if I were to use these going forward in my career.
