Software Engineer with 18+ years of experience developing innovative, high-quality embedded systems in the Telecommunications and Defense industries. Software engineering is about problem-solving. I am passionate about solving problems. Problem-solving is deeply connected to learning, often the only way to solve a problem is to keep learning about it, tenaciously investigating all aspects involved. I use my skills to look at challenges from different angles to find the most efficient solution. I effectively utilize the resources available, which, for embedded systems and Blockchains, may not be many. Is the problem intermittent? How can you collect more data? Where can you store it? Where can you send it? It is essential to be methodical, create experiments, and see what works, isolate the fault until the solution appears. What problems can I solve for you? I will be tenacious in my investigations, and I will persist and find the right solution. I will take ownership of the challenge. I have considerable leadership experience and excellent teamwork skills in startups and large corporations. I have worked closely and effectively with multi-functional teams from System Engineering, Hardware, System Verification/QA, and Production to achieve project requirements. I have a passion for debugging challenging software. I am a global citizen with an appreciation for other countries and cultures. I am an innovative, experienced C/C++ firmware/software engineer with a dedication to quality. I am looking for a stimulating company where I can use my expertise to build the next big technology.

Lead Software EngineerCiena May 2004 - Jan 2006Hanover, Maryland, UsDesigned and implemented the C/C++ Linux kernel device driver for the CN4200, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical switch supporting multiple data transfer protocols. Device drivers provided the Application Programming Interface (API) to user applications for Operation, Administration, Maintenance, and Provisioning (OAM&P) of the FPGA hardware that provided the data path. Provided Board Support Package (BSP) firmware for all new 405 CPU based line cards. Integrated multiple sources of code (one for each of 3 existing PowerPC 405GP CPU boards) into a common source code base, to spend less time managing bug fixes and more time supporting new hardware, such as the IBM PowerNPe405H. -
Senior Software EngineerInternet Photonics Inc. Nov 2000 - May 20048th software engineer to join the startup spun off from Lucent Technologies Bell Labs. Lead Linux device driver engineer of IPI’s first product, the LightStack MX, an optical Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) Multiplexer for metro networks. Architected, designed, implemented, and integrated the FPGA and I2C C/C++ Linux kernel device driver and user-level daemon. Provided Software Group input to Hardware Design and Schematic Reviews. Coordinated limited hardware asset usage to allow for efficient time-on-hardware for the Hardware, Software, and System Verification/Quality Assurance groups. Used initiative and assumed leadership for the LightStack MX project when needed, and was later recognized as Software Project Lead. Maintained the project, which provided our main revenue stream until acquisition. IPI was acquired by Ciena in May 2004. Liaison with senior management (VP Engineering, CEO), Marketing/Requirements, Hardware, Operations/Production, and System Verification/QA for LightStack MX. Provided customer support for IPI’s first products as a second-tier response for problems in the field, and provided bug fixes quickly to resolve customer issues. Supported the enhancement of the system boot firmware in C and assembly. Added support for partitioning new flash file system to increase defragmentation efficiency.
