At Gilmore, I received my first hands-on structural design experience. I worked on small to midsize projects including both bridges and buildings. I was exposed to various aspects of a project from the beginning request for proposals to change orders during construction. It was a great internship where I utilized my time to learn as much as I can from the people around me.

My position as a construction inspector with Pennoni was, in my opinion, the best experience a young engineering professional could receive. My daily duties include testing concrete and soils as well as inspecting rebar. Everyday, I write a report of the work that took place that day and whether or not it adhered to the structural engineer's design. If I witness work that is not in conformance with the design, I relay the discrepancy to the contractor and witness the fix before the work is continued. This job is allowing me to see first hand, how a large project comes to life while paying attention to every detail that the engineer provides. It also allows me to work as part of the construction team, dealing with construction managers, contractors, engineers, and even architects. I am often included in conversations regarding RFIs and changes to the design. I truly believe that witnessing the every day tasks that are required to make a design work will help become a better engineer in the future.

My summer with Delaware Valley Concrete was a fantastic experience that allowed me to gain so much knowledge about concrete. I got the opportunity to gain first hand experience in learning mix designs, testing the concrete in the field, testing the aggregate in the lab, batching the concrete at the plant, and scheduling the concrete at the office. As a quality control position, it also taught me proper customer service because in the end, concrete is just a product that is bought from a contractor. If the concrete was not as intended, it was my job to go out to the site to talk to the contractor and either improve the concrete with admixtures or send it back.

My first position with Pennoni was as a co-op student who worked for a semester while gaining work experience as well as course credits. As a co-op, Pennoni hired me to temporarily run their concrete testing lab while their full time employee went on leave for several months. During my time in the lab, my main focus was testing the compressive strength of concrete cylinders and relaying the results to the clients. My other focus was stripping and organizing the cylinders in lime baths so the correct cylinders would be tested on the specific day they were required. My other duties included testing the compressive strength for grout and mortar as well as the density of spray fireproofing material. This experience opened me up to the engineering side of construction, dealing with the importance of load distribution on freshly poured concrete. It also taught me great life skills such as organization and time management.

Working as these positions helped me learn a lot of great engineering skills. For AutoCad, I would redraw blueprints that were given to us from the architects for the purpose of making the laborers jobs easier. I would include every meaningful dimension as well as any other information pertaining to concrete, such as, which size rebar the footings take and where they are placed. After I finish a print, I would drive to the site and layout the house using a geodimeter.
