About Matthew Root
Matt trained as an accountant in the mid-80s before completing a degree in education and working as a teacher. In the mid-90s he joined Stafford-Millar, a privately-owned US pharmaceutical company and began to form a comprehensive knowledge of the healthcare industry. In 1996, Matt joined John Butler at Response Medical and together grew the business until it was sold to an AIM-listed company, IMD Plc, which had embarked upon a 'buy & build' strategy of acquiring successful UK medical companies.In 2007 Matt founded INTERVENE Ltd following a robust business model, underpinned by dynamic market knowledge and commercial agility. It operated in niche areas of the industry and delivered innovative solutions to daily problems. Matt's experience and focus contributed in no small part to INTERVENE's success. In September 2016 INTERVENE was acquired by GBUK Group Ltd.In November 2017, Matt created The Root Academy with his two sons, Joe Root (Yorkshire CCC and England), Billy Root (Glamorgan CCC) and MCC colleague, Ben Stephens. The Root Academy is now run by the management team at Emprise. All the profits from the Root Academy go to the Root Foundation whose purpose is to fund worthy causes in cricket.Matt's current role is Chairman of the Emprise Group Ltd, whose brands include the Barmy Army, the Root Academy and Emprise Digital.
