- Modeled and optimized the performance and electronic transport of a plasmonic Si-based infrared sensor. This work involved: - Studying electronic structure and transport theory, the state of the art in plasmonic optical detection, and the physics of semiconductor devices. - Mathematically modeling the performance of internal-photoemission-based photodiodes. Writing a report on the model to explain and share my findings with others. - Writing and running code to calculate the quantum efficiency and noise predicted by this model in prospective devices. - Calculating the absorption of plasmonic metamaterials with Lumerical and reproducing near-perfect absorbers. - Integrating my electronic transport calculations in MATLAB with the electromagnetic absorption simulations in COMSOL, to produce estimates of the external quantum efficiency for use in genetic algorithm-based device optimization.- Optimized the performance of an optical double diffraction-grating analyzer with electromagnetic simulations in Lumerical, RCWA, and COMSOL.- Simulated the full-wave optical response in Lumerical of a micro-lens array fabricated directly on top of a fiber-optic plate. Optimized lens properties for improved focusing: - Ran large simulation sweeps using high-performance computing (HPC) resources. Organized and analyzed the resulting datasets. - Designed and simulated multiple lens types, including ball, planoconvex, & Fresnel lenses.- Calculated optical propagation from a spatial light modulator (SLM) & metasurface, and through a lens & free space, to understand the feasibility of such an apparatus for optical computation, as a variant of a photonic Ising machine: - Formulated & improved the model to account for spatial patterns across the full detector plane, and the effects of the metasurface(s), with code in NumPy and PyTorch.- Configured a GPU-enhanced rack-mount computer and installed software for artificial intelligence (AI) operations.
