People need buildings that keep them comfortable and healthy. A building is only sustainable if people love to use it, for a long time. I'm strong building services engineer, leading teams of engineers and specialists to deliver sustainable theatres and exhibition spaces, schools, colleges, workplaces and housing. I particularly enjoy the opportunity to sensitively refurbish buildings of any age, listed or not.There are two threads to my passion for working in the built environment. Focused work to solve a technical problem, and collaborative design to reach the best solution for the whole project. To each discussion I bring a thorough understanding of the underlying possibilities, the physics; and how our designs can be built.A solid technical knowledge is only half the story. Listening and questioning brings an understanding of how people will use and relate to the building. By this understanding, everyone involved can contribute across the project as the design evolves, to make the final building better.I led development of our practice's environmental management systems through ISO 14001, and similarly revitalising a previous ISO 9001 system to become imbedded in our daily operation. I remain involved in drawing on our experience to drive improvement across the practice.Specialties: Theatres and auditoria, recording and performance studios, archives, exhibition spaces. Education, including primary, secondary and HE, also SEN schools (ASD). Sympathetic refurbishment of historic, modernist and brutalist buildings for existing and new uses.
