About Matthew Ludlow

I am a third year senior in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan. Currently, I am helping teach an engineering systems design, build, fly course for the Department of Aerospace. On Michigan Aeronautical Science Association (MASA), I lead composite manufacturing, integration, and testing of MASA’s high powered solid rockets. I also lead the development of MASA's in-house 6-Degree of Freedom flight simulation software which models propellent thrust blowdown, flight stability, trajectory, and recovery dispersion for MASA's liquid bipropellant rocket Limelight.

  • Michigan Aeronautical Science Association (Masa)
    Flight Simulation Lead
Michigan Aeronautical Science Association (Masa) May 2023 - Present
    Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States
Aerodynamics and Recovery Sub-team:Currently developing a 6-DoF flight dynamics simulation in Python for liquid bipropellant rockets. Based on previous 6-DoF flight dynamics simulation in MATLAB. Functionality includes:- Engine thrust curve, simulation from launching off of the rail through powered, blowdown, and cruise flight in subsonic and supersonic flight up to apogee, recovery sequence with pilot, drogue, and main chutes, non-constant wind vector, roll couple tracking, Monte Carlo uncertainty runs, and visual plotting utilizing Google Earth.Accomplishments:- Computed a Monte Carlo analysis of non-constant wind effect on flight at different altitudes given varying rocket configurations and plotted trajectory and landing dispersion in Google Earth.- Used rocket configurations to determine high-level requirements including attaining an apogee over 50k feet, a safe landing speed, required engine thrust, and airframe characteristics of Limelight, MASA's liquid bipropellent rocket with the goal of beating the liquid collegiate altitude record of 50k feet.
