Alma’s Talking Dogs aimed to deepen the relationship between dogs and humans by leveraging EEG data to uncover the thoughts of dogs. Upon joining my freshman year, I explored various sub-teams to discover the best fit for me. During my first year, I contributed to the Computer Science team. The team primarily focused on data processing and filtering algorithms, but despite my passion for coding, I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. My sophomore year led me to join the Electrical team. Throughout that year, we overhauled our previous design and developed a new circuit aimed at filtering out noise, amplifying the EEG signal, and incorporating a DC offset to the output. Our primary focus was on frequencies ranging between 7 and 31 Hertz. The major source of noise, stemming from the grid, predominantly fell around 60 Hertz. As we utilized an Arduino to receive the EEG data, it was necessary to amplify the brain waves for readability, while also incorporating an offset to ensure the data remained within the zero-to-five-volt range. In my junior year, the Electrical team aimed to finalize the circuit design and fabricate a suitable PCB. Regrettably, this plan fell through as several board members became overwhelmed with other commitments and gradually disappeared over the course of the year. Despite my best efforts, the RSO slowly dissolved. Despite its absence now, I remain grateful for the opportunities and valuable experience it provided me.

During the closing month of the semester, I engaged in developing a final project as part of the course requirements. In partnership with my colleague, we devised a Dungeon Explorer game, leveraging Quartus to implement it on an FPGA. Our game boasted several levels, diverse enemy types, and a challenging boss encounter. Notable features encompassed walking animations for both characters and enemies, engaging fighting screens with animated sequences, pseudorandom room selection, and flexible room creation mechanics. The room creation functionality was the highlight of the project for me. We developed a mapping system that employed an array of bits to designate walls on the screen. Thanks to this functionality, users could seamlessly create new room layouts with ease. The interactions between characters and walls were intricately designed. This complexity stemmed from the character's awareness of the active room setup, identification of wall blocks, and understanding of their interaction with the walls. By the semester's end, I found myself satisfied with our accomplishments, and the experience served to ignite my passion for FPGAs and RTL.
