About Matthew Wheal

After studying ecology of plants and animals for my BSc at the University of Adelaide, I took on a PhD in mineral nutrition of plants at the Waite campus. This led to research work at Cornell University in the USA, before returning to Australia to work on grapevine breeding for CSIRO in Merbein and teaching undergraduate biology topics at LaTrobe University's Mildura campus.Returning to Adelaide I changed direction, working as an analytical chemist measuring concentrations of macro- and micro- nutrients in plant and animal tissue, water and other materials on a fast-turnaround, fee-for-service basis using ICP-OES instruments. Prior to my current role, I worked at Flinders University, installing equipment and developing methods to measure nutrients in fish, rice and wheat flour by ICP-MS.Since 2016 I have been working as a Laboratory Technician at AWRI Affinity Labs. I am the primary operator of the ICP-MS instrument measuring a 20 metal suite of elements in wine and related matrices. In 2021 I published a paper using the new multi-isotope calibration method that can be applied to a wide range of non-standard liquid matrices.
