Matthew Wilson is a Barbadian with 25 years of experience in Trade and Development. He is currently the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations, WTO and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador to Switzerland, and Permanent Representative of Barbados to the UN agencies in Austria and Rome. He is the Chair of the WTO MSMEs WG, a member of the WEF Steering Committee Climate Trade Zero, is on the Boards of the International Gender Champions, the Forum on Trade, Environment and the SDGS (TESS); & UNCTAD ASYCUDA. He is an International Gender Champion. He currently Chairs the ACP Geneva Group and was the WHO Executive Board Chair in June 2024.He was the Chief of Special Projects at the International Trade Centre, the joint development agency of the WTO and the UN. He focused on building partnerships, resource mobilization and outreach. He has held various roles including Chief of Staff at the International Trade Centre to former Executive Director Arancha Gonzalez, Senior Adviser to the WTO Director General Pascal Lamy, Deputy Aid for Trade Coordinator at the WTO, and a Trade and Human Rights negotiator for the Government of Barbados. He has coordinated the group of small economies at the WTO, served as Vice-Chair of the WTO Committee on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures, the Committee on Anti-Dumping and the Safeguards Committee and was the first ‘Friend of the Chair’ for the special and differential treatment negotiations of the Trade Facilitation Agreement. He has degrees in Psychology, International Relations, Development Studies and MBA-Essentials. He is an innovation, diversity and inclusion champion and has contributed to a number of mentorship related activities. He has written articles on a number of trade related and social issues. In his spare time he has contributed short stories to a number of platforms and has had his photography featured on the BBC and in a number of exhibitions. He is a Member of the Advisory Board of the Shridath Ramphal Centre for International Trade Law, at the University of the West Indies and is a Chevening Scholar. He has served as innovation champion at the ITC and won innovation awards for his work on partnerships and on diversity and inclusion.
