About Matt Wilson

I am a Physics PhD candidate at the Institute of Photonics, University of Strathclyde. My research focus is the development of novel integrated photonic devices for use in next-generation neuromorphic computing systems, with the ultimate aim of achieving on-chip photonic information processing. Specifically, I am interested in:- Optical chaos in dielectric microcavities- Photonic information processing systems- Polymer integrated photonic devices- Machine learning and artificial intelligenceI am involved at all stages of device development: design, fabrication and characterisation. I hold a particular interest in the design phase. I am skilled in the mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of electromagnetic systems. This includes eigenmode modelling and finite difference time domain simulation. I have also created several python scripts to automate the analysis of simulated data. Additionally, I authored an internal training document on using eigenmode modelling to help others in the research group use this technique to design wave-guiding structures.Prior to my PhD, I earned my Master of Physics (MPhys) degree with a specialisation in Photonics from the University of Strathclyde in 2023. My research project was focused on modelling Förster resonant energy transfer between molecules using “molecular dynamics” computational modelling on a high-performance computing system. I also hold an HNC in Mechanical Engineering and a CMI Level 5 qualification in Management and Leadership. In addition to my research interests, I actively engage in physics education and outreach activities. I am a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Physics Department at the University of Strathclyde. I am currently in my second year of teaching mathematics to undergraduate physics students. I provide weekly tutorial classes designed to teach students how to use mathematical techniques to solve problems in physics. Additionally, I organise and chair the annual physics department guest lecture series. This is a term-time weekly event where guest speakers provide lectures to undergraduates, postgraduates and staff of the university on various different topics in modern physics.

Physics Phd Candidate

Current

Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

I am currently a second year physics PhD candidate at the University of Strathclyde. My research focus is the development of integrated photonic devices for next generation neuromorphic computing systems. My aim is to create chip-scale photonic hardware based ML/AI systems.I am involved at all stages of device development: design, fabrication and characterisation. I have a particular interest in the design phase and I am skilled in eigenmode modelling and FDTD simulation techniques. I also have skills in the fabrication and characterisation of polymer integrated photonic devices. I am trained in using direct-write UV laser lithography to fabricate devices under cleanroom conditions. I am also currently building skills in the characterisation of photonic integrated circuits at telecommunication wavelengths (C-band).

Manufacturing Technical Author

Renfrew, Scotland, United Kingdom

I worked as a member of the equipment engineering and calibration team at this international medical device manufacturing company for the summer before starting my PhD. My role was to review and revise procedural and policy documentation related to the maintenance of production machinery and the calibration of measurement equipment to ensure compliance with set regulatory standards.

Student Researcher

Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

I carried out 2 independent research projects in the Photophysics group at the University of Strathclyde, under the supervision of Dr Olaf Rolinski. This was done to satisfy the independent research project requirement for my integrated masters degree. My first research project was focused on modelling Förster resonant energy transfer between molecules using the “molecular dynamics” simulation method and computational modelling. The aim was to develop a MATLAB script that could aid in the analysis of molecular dynamics simulations and better aid interpretation of experimental results. My second research project aimed to investigate the benefits of using multiple fluorescence measurement techniques to detect the aggregation of beta-amyloid proteins without using fluorescent dyes, exploiting the weak intrinsic fluorescence of the molecules. The two methods selected were time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy and fluorescence lifetime decay measurements on a TCSPC spectrometer. The results of these projects were disseminated into a dissertation and mock paper respectively. Following viva examination, both projects were graded highly (1:1).

Manufacturing Engineer

Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

I joined the Manufacturing and Testing team at Alba Orbital in August 2023 while in the final year of my integrated masters degree. In this role, I developed my technical and leadership skills by taking on a supervisory position within the manufacturing and testing laboratory. I demonstrated an ability to lead and mentor junior members of staff while completing complex technical tasks and meeting agreed KPIs. I also undertook laboratory management duties e.g. installing new equipment, maintaining health and safety documentation, purchasing of consumables and creating mechanical drawings for bespoke parts.

Urnu Midshipman

Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

I was involved with the Royal Naval Reserve during the first three years of my integrated master's degree through the Glasgow Universities Royal Naval Unit.In this role I received weekly training in management and technical skills. I was appointed as a Divisional Officer, managing a division of 15 individuals. I also gained valuable experience in directly leading a team of up to 10 people while deployed on-ship. Additionally, I was able to strongly develop my technical and engineering skills in this role. While deployed I formed part of the engineering team, assisting in equipment maintenance and repair, the daily set-up of essential equipment and representing the engineering team during emergency drills.
