While at Korea Techno Agency, I proofread utility patents which were translated from Japanese to English. These patents ranged from software, to machines, to solar panels, to chemical processes, etc.I typically proofread several patents and/or patent rejections letters each day (20,000+ words total). This involved identifying and correcting each logical error, erroneous patent language, misspelling, etc., as well as double-checking any suspicious segments against the original Japanese text. I also retranslated mistranslated sentences or sections when time permitted.Other aspects of my job included studying patent law and language, researching unfamiliar topics that appeared in the patents I proofread, and coordinating with translators and other checkers to meet deadlines.

While working as an English teacher, I taught speaking, listening, and writing to small classes of children grades 4 through 9.My responsibilities included creating lessons for each of my classes (~25/week), conducting lessons and disciplining students, tracking student progress with quarterly reports (~120 students), conducting weekly phone lessons with students.My lessons were based mainly around conversation, dialogs, and repetition. For example, we would practice various phrases describing the location of items in a supermarket, and then pairs of students would converse with each other to fill out complementary maps, like a scavenger hunt. Other lessons involved brainstorming and writing, like talking about the differences between Halloween in Korea and America and then writing a short essay about it.Korean students are often worried about making mistakes and shy to participate, so I used humor to lighten the atmosphere and engage students in the class.

While at ARL, I worked on a small team to create Flex applications. Our main project was a browser-based environment where users could search for and import documents and articles from various sources, analyze them, and submit a report. This project resulted in a government licensing deal.My responsibilities included designing, prototyping, and developing user interfaces, as well as troubleshooting and debugging front-end/back-end integration. I also independently developed an interactive timeline visualization in Flex to graph time-associated data over any time range.

While interning at SunGard, I modified and updated Java code for Content Management Software (CMS) deployments to match varying customer configurations. I also modularized Ant projects by moving them to Maven, and then tested the deployment of those projects to Archiva and Tomcat for internal and external use.

While working at Pergamon, my tasks were varied and included programming software in Visual Basic to test and manipulate LIFE ALERT® (“I’ve fallen and I can’t get up”®) devices over serial interface, administrating the company network and implementing changes such as modifying group policy or enabling roaming profiles, purchasing and setting up new computers and networking equipment, and writing documentation.
