About Matthew Bellomo

I am currently a middle school science teacher at Edward Bleeker JHS 185 in Flushing, Queens. In 2022, I was selected as a Fulbright Fellow amongst a large pool of educators for the highly competitive Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms program. I have been participating in this year-long professional learning opportunity by the U.S. Department of State to equip myself with the skills, tools and mindset to prepare my students to be collaborative critical thinkers and engaged global citizens in the 21st century. I graduated from Adelphi University with my Master of Arts in Adolescent Education and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Middle School Education. I also received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Adelphi University. I hold NYS certifications in Biology (7-12), Earth Science (7-12), General Science (7-12), Biology Middle School Extension (5-6), General Science Middle School Extension (5-6) and TESOL (PK-12). While pursing my Masters, I student taught in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District and was a Science Department intern for the district. My students are often engaging in deep discussions and collaborative investigations about real-world problems. I continually strive to grow in my practice to translate my passion for science into relevant student-centered lessons that motivate my students and stimulate a positive classroom climate. Outside of class, I am currently the Go Green Co-Coordinator at my school and co-chair of the Science Expo/Fair. I initiated and developed these new programs/events to generate student excitement for STEM and encourage students to go green. As Go Green Co-Coordinator, I organize events to motivate students and families to conserve energy, reduce their carbon footprint, recycle and change their habits. During lunch periods, I guide students in designing, conducting and analyzing their own long-term investigations for the Science Fair.Since 2018, I have been an Urban Advantage (UA) Science Teacher where I consistently participate in a variety of professional learning to promote rigorous practice-based science. Through this program, I embed new strategies in class to strengthen student engagement, foster student-centered investigations and deepen discussions about science phenomena.
