Senior Product Owner

Current

Ipswich, Ma

I work as an Agile Product Owner in a SAFe environment.

Mar 2019 - Present

Product Owner

Ann Arbor, Mi

As a Product Owner, I was responsible for backlog refinement, including requirements gathering and analysis for both customer implementations and core product development. These efforts led to the successful implementation of multiple customers, and the architecting and development, from the ground up, of products sold to these customers. These include web payment portals (SaaS), data warehouses, and data marts, which were developed on technologies such as JSON based APIs, Java, and AngularJS.In order to capture requirements that add value, I was tasked with building successful working relationships with customers and other stakeholders, both internal and external, including product management, developers, UI/UX designers, QA, and executive level management. These relationships helped with essential requirements gathering, backlog refinement, sprint planning, product delivery, and client implementation.I helped to build an agile environment by co-defining the in-house SDLC, following an Agile process, the creation and maintenance of JIRA Kanban and Scrum boards (depending on the project) and working methodologies (including backlog refinement, sprint planning, scrums, sprint reviews, and sprint retrospectives), and all supporting documentation.I documented business and working process flows and used these flows to create process improvement requirements to both improve business practices and work on iterative product development.I created and maintained the standard document template for customer requirements and core product requirements.I created, owned, or co-owned all process and technical documentation, including API documentation, operations manuals, QA test scripts, and file specifications.Being, until late in my tenure, the only Product Owner, I had to quickly learn and understand all in-house products, which allowed me to analyze business needs, understand the desires of clients, and better create requirements.

Oct 2015 - Mar 2019

Product Owner

Ann Arbor, Mi

As a Product Owner I was accountable for the implementation and quality of both large and small software initiatives in the healthcare space by refining the product backlog, writing and analyzing detailed functional and non-functional requirements and leading cross-functional teams (comprising product management, architects & developers, UI/UX, and QA) in order to help realize our aims of full product completion. I was heavily involved from the beginning of multiple projects, following the Scrum framework (and later with Scrum and Kanban), through to product delivery, and consistent increment release, helping to provide full documentation of all new services and applications in order to accomplish these goals.I worked on a variety of products, from mobile applications (iOS and Android), through web based software (SaaS), to performance and security enhancements, each of which have been successfully deployed for use by customers and their user bases.I worked closely with all departments, including architecture, development, UI/UX, QA, Project Management, and Product Management, in order to make sure that the goals and requirements were fully understood, work proceeded as planned, and that the business goals were met.I analyzed aspects of internal business workflows to produce process improvement documents, helping the company to streamline working practices and improve efficiency across multiple areas of the organization. Those documents not only helped to improve existing processes, but also provide necessary documentation where none had previously existed.I was heavily involved in the drive to improve documentation across all areas of the business, which included writing documents myself and helping other teams author their own. This enabled the Product Owner team to serve more projects simultaneously as well as better identifying and addressing backlog documentation needs.

Sep 2013 - Oct 2015

Writer And Editor (Office Of Marketing And Communications)

Baiziwan Nan Er Lu, Chaoyang District, Beijing

As part of an international team, I was responsible for the creation of all English language content for the Office of Marketing and Communications at the school. This involved liaising with and interviewing a wide range of people, including admin staff, faculty, board members, parents, and members of the local media. The articles and news items I wrote were published on the school web site, the school blog, the in-house magazine, and in various third party magazines. This ensured that the school was well publicized amongst the local and international community and helped to generate new business. To help develop an effective content strategy, I single-handedly oversaw the implementation of a social networking presence for the school. This began with the proposal stage, which involved writing a research document and presenting my findings to the school board justifying the need for social media in marketing, PR, and admissions. My work resulted in the adoption of school accounts on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and a WordPress blog. These new social media tools contributed greatly to the successful marketing of the school, and helped to spread the school’s message to a wider audience.I was also heavily involved in all other aspects of the department, including the production and creation of promotional videos for the school, as well as photography, both of which were included in marketing materials.I was a member of the school IT Committee, where I helped to review the IT infrastructure and make decisions regarding the adoption of new technology and the use of existing hardware and software.

Aug 2011 - Jun 2013

Technical Writer

Microsoft Research Asia, Zhongguancun, Beijing

Working closely with researchers, architects, and developers, I wrote technical documents about hardware and software that were created in house by the researchers. This involved writing in language that properly explained the workings and functionality of the product to an audience outside of the industry.I reviewed and edited research papers, making sure that they were readable and maintained the technical integrity necessary to be accepted by their peers in the various international conferences and journals to which they were submitted. These were delivered to very tight deadlines and so my work had to meet the company's high standards in a very timely fashion. I also reviewed other documents, such as personal statements and presentations, making sure that the language was of high quality, while maintaining the researcher's writing style and personality.I interviewed internal stakeholders, discussing their work in detail to ensure that their ideas were not only expressed logically and properly in English, but that they were targeted to the correct audience.I co-hosted the MSRA demonstration room, meeting with important key clients and executives, where I showed the latest technologies created at Microsoft. This helped to spread the word about the world-class innovations that researchers developed, and helped to solidify important business relationships.I was also involved in the creation of some of the demos, from helping with filming, through script editing, and to performing a voice-over. My input helped viewers understand more about the lab’s research.I co-taught an undergraduate level English Technology and Communication course for University of Science and Technology of China student interns. This included curriculum building, lesson creation, and teaching. This connected Microsoft with the local community and helped to improve the international internship program.
