As an intern in the Department of Epidemiology, I trained a machine learning model using R to identify the source of cancer sample based on gene mutation data. Through research and mentorship from my team, I gained important biological intuition on how to select features, visualize the data, and build the model in a way that was consistent with landscape of cancer research. The end application, Cancer Source Identifier, is a tool for quality control for clinicians and can help identify cancers of unknown origins for MD Anderson patients.In August, I presented my research as part of a cancer research exposition at MD Anderson. I articulated the novelty and significance of my team's research and engaged my listeners with visuals and analogies.

Through the Undergraduate Research Scholars program at Texas A&M, I published a year-long study, Nashville to Neural Networks: A Study of Subgenre Recognition in Country Music, contributing to computer science and machine learning research. The goal of my research was to take an audio-based, quantitative approach to distinguishing different subgenres of country music and showcase how music services can use machine learning models to better engage their users.I first performed a literature review to evaluate the state of the country music industry and learn machine learning methods for music genre recognition. Then, I built a database of over 1000 songs using Python Pandas and the Spotify API. I converted mp3 data from each song into mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs). I trained three different Scikit Learn machine learning models on the MFCC and subgenre label inputs: neural network, random forest, and K-nearest neighbor. For each model, I tuned the hyperparameters to get the most accurate model possible. Then, I evaluated their performances against each other and reported my findings.In addition to publishing a research paper, I delivered a public speaking presentation to an audience of professors and students at the URS symposium in February.

Over the years, I have fostered a community of over 50k followers with a passion for climbing 14ers (mountains over 14,000 feet). I use my influence to promote local businesses and creatives, encourage people to go enjoy the outdoors, and preserve our natural treasures for future generations. This often looks like negotiating with other related businesses to rent advertising space on my Instagram or featuring fun user-generated photos and videos. To better engage my followers, I created a Python dashboard which utilizes the Instagram API to provide me with analytics for my business. I use these analytics to decide what time of day to post, what type of content to post, etc.

I collaborated on several projects throughout the summer relating to database maintenance and improvement. One of these included validating a database with PL/SQL, which I ended up mentoring a fellow intern in. I used Python to automate many of the data collection and processing methods to efficiently complete my tasks. Most of the other interns were electrical engineering majors, so we often exchanged domain knowledge to help each other complete projects. Towards the middle of the summer, I took initiative in building upon a Python-based tool use to analyze and reconcile two different databases, saving the modeling team hundreds of hours. At the end of the summer, I presented my contributions to an audience of 50 coworkers and executives and received positive feedback.

I learned how to operate on a team of developers using Azure DevOps and Agile scrum methodologies. I designed hundreds of automated unit tests in C# for a civil engineering design application. Through automated tests and manual testing, I was able to identify and diagnose hundreds of bugs, reporting my findings in scrum meetings and carefully documenting how to reproduce the bugs. Through this process, I was able to greatly improve the quality of our application for the next release.

I coached swim lessons for kids between the ages of 3 and 12. Over the weeks, I developed solid relationships with my students and helped them improve their swimming skills and confidence. Often, they went from being afraid of the water to jumping in and swimming across the pool. Each student’s personality, age, and experience brought new teaching challenges. I adapted the curriculum given to me along with my swimming experience to cater to each student as much as possible.
