Matthew Combs of Newport, Rhode Island, earned a bachelor of arts with a focus in biology from Hamilton College in May 2013. Throughout his undergraduate studies, Matthew Combs completed a wide range of biology-related courses, covering subject matter such as ecology and evolutionary chemistry, organic chemistry, genetics, and nature and technology. He also took an effort to relate his major with the social sciences by taking multiple courses focused on Science and Technology Studies. In his senior year, the Newport resident produced a thesis on the potentiality of a nematode (Heligmosomoides bakeri) to serve as a preventative for Type 1 Diabetes. In addition to his coursework, Mr. Combs completed multiple internships and worked on several research projects. While enrolled at Hamilton, he served as a research aide in the Parasitology Lab and as a teachers assistant to a biology instructor. He also worked 10 hours per week in the college’s greenhouse. Additionally, he combined his interests in photography and design with his scientific background during his junior year by performing an independent research into natural patterns of natural and man-made origin using earth imagery and advanced microscopy.In 2012, Mr. Combs conducted a National Science Foundation-funded internship at Harvard University’s Harvard Forest, where he was part of a team studying the effects of climate change on ant ecology as well as undertaking an independent research project investigating the ant nest architecture and brood care of the ant Formica subsericea as it relates to temperature variation. In the summer of 2013 he interned and undertook research for the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Crested Butte, Colorado. More recently, Matthew Combs began an internship at the Ecotarium in Worcester, MA as their Exhibit Development Intern.
