Over the past decade I have been working in the information technology space. I have always tried to provide value to the business through technology. Ultimately IT only has value if it has value to the business and the way it helps the business meet its goals. IT is a catalyst that will provide strategic value to shine light in the darkness in this data driven world.It’s not easy though, to explain the meaning and importance of many of IT metrics to the business. Packet loss and throughput may keep the network manager awake at night, but talking about them to people from sales, marketing and executives is more likely to put them to sleep or disengage someone. Today, with increasing pressure on IT budgets to do more with less there needs to be someone that can ease that pressure and make it more streamline. Being in the consulting industry this is my ultimate goal to lift that burden off the business.As they should, Executives have the mindset that what money is available, is spent wisely. IT is thought of more as a cost, a mindset of "If we have surplus money then we can spend it on IT" rather than a strategic advantage. This scrutiny is increasing due to several factors, including weak growth, bad perception (that what is bought, is not being used) and just a general bad reputation that IT is separate from the business. My goal as a IT consultant is to move executives in the direction that IT can be a strategic advantage in any industry. Technology is improving so rapidly and the skillsets of technical team members are so high, great IT teams can provide good service and great reporting that shows ROI metrics to justify spending, trends in the market and what needs to be shifted to grow and further the business. It is important to measure not only the services that are used, but also the business results that come from their use.
