Matthew has always been interested in place-making. When he graduated from high school, Matthew worked full time for a General Contractor building homes, learning everything from digging footings to hanging shingles. Construction was a way for Matthew to use his hands and create space, but he longed to have more involvement in the vision and design of space. While attending Architecture school, Matthew continued to work in construction - gaining practical hands-on experience became an integral aspect of his design philosophy. Ultimately, it was his internship with architect, Arthur Dyson which strengthened his interest in sustainability, detailing and poetic architecture and where he learned to see architecture as a “verb”, as an experience.After graduation Matthew worked for a large corporate firm in San Diego to gain experience with new building types and with business management styles. Matthew worked for the 2nd largest firm in San Diego, Austin Veum Robbins Partners, where he worked diligently to earn the respect of his peers and was named the youngest Associate in the firm. In 2002, Matthew broke off and started his own practice, with wife and Partner, Teresa. Bluemotif’s first commissions were primarily Single-Family Residences and small Tenant Improvements. However, the company’s reputation as a strong service provider and innovative problem-solving coupled with strong technical skills grew quickly, as did the workload. Matthew enjoys the intricacies associated with a small firm and has found that doing so allows him the ability to maintain personal involvement with every aspect of each project from the technical to project management to business development.
