Nov 2015 - Jan 2016Athens, Georgia, UsWith a generous grant of two free copies of Co-opoly thanks to the CHS Foundation and the Toolbox for Education and Social Action (TESA) I taught a class to the Young Urban Farmers program of the Athens Land Trust which teaches high school students grades 9-11 from three local high schools essential skills in food-based entrepreneurship while giving them a wage for their labor. I taught the students "Co-op 101" with a powerpoint then had hands-on learning with the Co-opoly boards allowing the students to learn by doing. Worker'S Rights Conference PanelistAthens For Everyone Sep 2015 - Sep 2015This conference focused on the rights of Athens workers and was the kick-off to the worker's rights campaign of Athens for Everyone. Workplace grievance procedures were discussed including the definition of "conserted activity" under the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act which provides many of the protections available to Georgia workers in a right-to-work and employment-at-will state. I joined local labor attorney JF Beasley and executive director of the Economic Justice Coalition Linda Lloyd as I presented the case of Peachy Green Clean Co-op, the first worker-owned cleaning co-op in Georgia, as a vehicle for worker's rights above the legally required minimum including profit sharing and democratic decision-making and governance for members of the co-op.
