Profile bio

About Matthew Farrelly

I am a former K-12 teacher of 10 years, and now a joint doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Educational Policy Studies and History. I am broadly interested in intellectual history, environmental history, and history of education and more specifically in the phenomenology of reading and how mythic and poetic texts can serve as means to (re)enchant our relationship to/with the nonhuman world. In the stream of other interventions concerned to explore the meanings & malaises of “modernity”, I am researching and writing on the educational philosophy and practice of the Scottish-American naturalist, John Muir. I am hoping to tell a story of how Muir made sense of his own 19th and early 20th century moment, paying especial attention to the ways he navigated the tensions between modern science, religion and spirituality, nature, and formal and informal modes of education in order to make sense of the human condition, the human relationship with the nonhuman world, Nature Study, and the purpose(s) of American Conservation.Joining disciplines of history of education, environmental history, intellectual history, and philosophy of education, I hope to examine Muir in his own context, trace a reception history of his writings for environmental-educational applications, and explore how (and how not) Muir’s life and thought might speak to our present ecological crises. Each semester at the University I have either been a teaching assistant or instructor. I have been instructor of record for EPS/HIST 107, History of the University in the West since Fall 2021. I am also a K-12 educator with almost 15 years classroom experience. I also offer individuated and group holistic, interdisciplinary tutoring and growth coaching services aimed at strengthening core academic skills in reading, writing, rhetoric, and critical thinking through content-rich studies in both general and specialized disciplines.

Listed skills include Teaching, Curriculum Development, Public Speaking, Management, and 25 others.
