I have been managing orchards in Far North Queensland for over a decade. Originally for my family's 90Ha Mango/Avocado/Lime orchard and more recently a large, internationally owned 300Ha high density orchard. I am also currently completing my Masters in Agribusiness with Marcus Oldham.I was awarded a Nuffield Farming Scholarship in 2017 studying Robotics, Automation and emerging technology opportunities for the Australian tree crop industry. I have presented my findings to industry in both Australia and internationally as Keynote speaker at events such as the Australia Wine Industry Technical Conference, TropAg, EvokeAg among others. I have hosted farmers from all over the globe, and also lead agricultural study tours throughout Israel and Norway. I am passionate about the continuous improvement and viability of the Australian Agricultural space and believe well strategised, fit for purpose and expertly implemented technology, has the potential to return exponential payback.Prior to my "return to Ag", for a little over a decade, I was General Manager of Flight Centre Ltd's global emergency call centre based in Brisbane servicing the entire portfolio of Flight Centre Ltd companies. In this capacity I was responsible for the strategic planning, budgeting, forecasting and implementation, along with recruitment, training and management of over 30 staff both in office and WFH. During my time in this role my team managed all manner of emergency travel events including the Bali Bombings No. 1 and 2, the global grounding the entire Qantas fleet, and even the Brisbane floods that required the evacuation of our very own building.I was awarded No. 1 Consultant Global Assist for three successive years at the prestigious Flight Centre Global Awards in Barcelona, Las Vegas and Paris.I enjoy complex problem solving, particularly around process efficiency, and implementing technological solutions. I have an insatiable thirst for learning and knowledge and particularly enjoy strategising the mitigation of macro factors affecting businesses. I have a ‘let’s get it done’ attitude and I’m never afraid to roll up the sleeves and get my hands dirty. I love working with people to help them become the very best they can be, whether that’s professionally, or personally. I sit on the strategic advisory investment panel for Avocados Australia, I have sat on the board of the Australian Mango industry body, I have been involved in several Horticulture Innovation SIAP's.I sit on the advisory board for the AgTech company Farmable. My family is everything to me.

2017 Nuffield Australia ScholarNuffield Australia Farming Scholars Sep 2016 - PresentMatthew Fealy from Mareeba in Far North Queensland, receives a 2017 Nuffield Scholarship supported by Woolworths. He will investigate how the use of robotics in horticulture has the opportunity to revolutionise the industry.Matthew has only recently made a career change into horticulture. He was a senior manager at a global travel agency for over a decade before taking on his current role as farm manager for a 153-acre family farm that produces mangoes, avocados and Tahitian limes for the Australian and export markets. He believes that that the industry has significant labour costs and a dwindling labour supply, yet has little or no automation of repetitive tasks.“Robotics, automation and mechanisation will not only alleviate the impending labour problem, it can also help improve profits and yield through better farm management practices,” he said.“I see a (near) future where we can utilise advanced probes to facilitate precise fertilising and watering along with cutting-edge camera technology to assess tree health, crop and harvest forecasting, as well as maturity testing.”As an active member of his local growers’ association, and a board member of the Australian Mango Industry Association (AMIA), Matthew continues to demonstrate commitment to the success of horticulture in Australia into the future.“I have four children who I want to be involved in an exciting, rewarding, profitable horticulture industry. If there is a way I can help the industry, it is very much in my best interests to make it happen.”The awarding of this scholarship will enable him to attend Automatica – International Trade Fair for Automation and Mechatronics in Germany. Matthew will also visit farms using robotics in Israel, the Netherlands and Spain. Visits to the USA and Japan will also take place. -
