About Matthew F. Warren

My new role as a faculty member at UC Merced involves working with teams of people in Medical Education at UC Merced, UC San Francisco, and UCSF Fresno to build a medical education program at UC Merced. My previous work was conducting research in nutrition and physiology in different animal models. My most recent work as a postdoctoral researcher at UW-Madison involved examination of host genetic and dietary impacts on the gut microbiome and short-chain fatty acid homeostasis in the Diversity Outbred mouse model. I was also involved in a collaboration to evaluate butyrate production in gnotobiotic mice that were inoculated with defined bacterial communities containing butyrate producers. My doctoral work was done at NC State and I examined metabolic and physiologic impacts of dietary vitamin D3 in chickens. I developed and led an experimental study to investigate how dietary super-doses of vitamin D3 affected vitamin D metabolism in aged laying hens. I was in charge of animal husbandry, data management, data collection, and managing the sample collection teams. My master's research involved discerning how dietary protein intake influenced bacterial diversity in maternal gut and milk microbiota in rats. I managed the animal husbandry, data management and collection, and sample collection. I used Quantitative Insights Into Microbial Ecology (QIIME) to process raw sequence data from 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and conducted diversity analyses. I also examined the diversity analyses output for biological relevance to maternal effect. This was my master's research at Auburn University.I also do public speaking with presenting research and science-related outreach. I also work on mentoring roles through coaching methods to mentor students in research or professional development.

    Postdoctoral Trainee
    University Of Wisconsin-Madison Jul 2020 - Jun 2023
I was a NIH T32 funded postdoctoral trainee in the Metabolism and Nutrition Training Program (MANTP) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for my first 3 years as a postdoc. I was a postdoctoral trainee in the Rey Lab group in the Department of Bacteriology. My research examined host genetic and dietary impacts on the gut microbiome and short-chain fatty acid homeostasis in the Diversity Outbred mouse model. My current research is exploring how host genetics and diet influence gut microbial density and gut microbial short-chain fatty acid production. I am determining whether gut microbial density and short-chain fatty levels are predictors of gut health.
