Software Developer And Senior Manager Computational Sciences
CurrentCreating modern scalable software from scientific algorithms with a great presentation layer. We create software around existing scientific research and make it scalable using cloud technologies on GCP, Azure and AWS. We deploy ML and DL (both CNN and graph) work which has been researched in house to predict sites of genetic features in organisms, find features in microscope images and perform other data analysis. We have created a graph database (Neo4j) to link all genes and variants between humans and mice using the latest research and many different datasets (part of Geneweaver.org). We work on other non-ML algorithms for projects to provide better analysis capability for images and other scientific data. We deploy scientific models with intuitive UI/UX using Angular and widgets being created in-house as well as open source toolkits such as material, primeng and plotly. Our team is part of the software engineering for the organisation rather than the research, we are actively creating full stack products around existing discoveries.
Software Developer And Development Manager
Responsible for moving Landmark software to the cloud and creating new machine learning codes. We use AWS and Azure with Kubernetes in a microservice architecture to migrate existing and write new algorithms to a scalable architecture. We create stateless microservices using Java-Spring and Python and utilize modern technologies like parquet files and apache arrow to make data frames fast. Many new applications which we create use machine learning to automate and standardize things which technologists do, creating for them a digital twin which increases their productivity. The scrum teams are cross functional vertical teams with front end developers, full stack engineers, data scientists, devops, QA / testers. The teams work with AWS, Azure and other cloud vendors and we use open source software from Apache and Eclipse Foundation. Microservices of various types and languages are being created. Python with research machine learning libraries are playing a critical role in delivering some microservices as well.
Software Developer And Core Team Lead
Responsible for core team development for data acquisition and working with data analysis and hardware control teams to coordinate core features. Software architecture and team leadership for the group which consists of several large teams of software developers. Coordinating/leading several open source projects, such as DAWNSci and Eclipse Rich Beans. Releasing DLS software for example code controlling hardware and completing scans. Developing and designing the next generation of software for acquisition and analysis of synchrotron and other experimental data. Managing the product integration team and core team developers.Agile methodology used (DSDM Atern, similar to Scrum). Continuous integration and deployment. Daily stand-ups often of ten developers or more. Responsible for the graduate training posts in data acquisition.
Software Developer And Team Leader Dawn
Responsible for project leading and jointly developing, a Java based data analysis product called DAWN. It is software for image viewing and analysis of multidimensional data including complex scientific requirements. It is also a headless analysis system run on clusters for CPU intensive analysis algorithms, for instance using actor/director oriented models. The product is also c-python IDE and integratio tool making data analysis algorithms available to python programmers. For instance to integrate our algorithms and data with tools like numpy/scipy to create high performing data analysis pipelines. An example of one of those might be to map the metals in a sample, look at crystal structures or reconstruct three dimensional data from raw data.Agile development practices used based on DSDM Atern / Scrum. Managing/coordinating a large team (8+), especially close to release or when working on a significant sprint. Ran the stand-ups and took responsibility for product quality and UX issues; often doing the product owner role. Use of Jenkins, junit and squish tests. Continuous integration and continuous deployment (CICD) to the facility and wider user base. The project is open source and freely available to use. Source code control based on git. http://www.dawnsci.org
Senior Software Developer
Creation of a Java-based workbench for online data analysis. Working with agile development techniques and reusing a great deal of plugins and code from other open source projects. The team consisted of three developers and external contractors.http://www.dawnsci.org
Senior Software Developer
Software developer for data acquisition systems at the Diamond Light Source. Developed a new front end and live analysis systems for spectroscopy experiments.Agile practices used with TDD and short iterations involving the main business analysts, in this case scientists.http://www.dawnsci.org
Software Developer And Director Of Technology
A role held at the same time as developing software, primarily concerned with new technology and features to make software more profitable. At this time EASA was a small company of about twenty-five people dividing into five developers, two support engineers and a sales and management team.Agile practices used. Source Code Control. TDD. Software architecture design completed as needed. Java web backend (monolithic server design), compute servers (more like microservice design) and both a web client and a thick Java Swing client are part of EASA. I am joint patent holder for the technology of EASA.
Senior Software Developer
Java developer responsible for the user interface, excel services and custom code parts of the EASA software.
Junior Software Developer
Developed user interfaces for computational fluid dynamics software called CFX now marketed by ANSYS Inc. Long release cycles with complex up front technical design and a heavy manual testing effort before release. The product was a desktop application delivered running a numerical solver. Development with waterfall management processes (which are were effective in this scenario).
