About Matthew S. Gillman
I am a Software Developer with Akhter Computers Ltd., in Harlow, Essex, UK.Until recently I was a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the IET (CEng MIET) but decided I wouldn't renew in December 2022. The cost was £253 and I didn't think it was worth paying that just for some post-nominals!

Acted as a C programmer for Toshiba in Cambridge. Produced websites for small businesses.
Senior Computer Programmer
* Developed C++/Perl/R Linux “pipelines” (software suites) using own software plus that developed by others. Purpose: investigate “copy number variation”, where the number of copies of a given DNA segment varies between diseased and healthy people. This included QC threshold investigation and processing very big files and large numbers of smaller files. Implemented a number of enhancements to the open source PennCNV package (Perl).* Wrote C++ utility to make a common task easier; this was then used frequently by colleagues. * Careful documentation of software.* Participated in regular conference calls. Gave a number of presentations about the pipelines.* Contributed to research paper.* Refereed article submitted to journal Bioinformatics, making good use of analysis skills in the process.
Scientific Officer
* Developed C++ software on Windows using MFC and Win32. On one project, set up the Linux server-side as well as writing the Windows client; this culminated in a successful customer acceptance test and sign-off.* Liaised with companies, academia and other agencies in the vehicle recognition (VR) arena: using software to determine vehicle make and model from ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) camera images. Devised, and issued guidance to companies on, the statistical testing régime to which their VR applications would be subjected. This took into account the underlying errors in the reference data used. *An eye for detail; found a number of typesetting errors in a British Standard, causing it to be withdrawn.*Secretary of software “cross-cutting” (discussion) group; gave presentations to this, e.g. the basics of threading.
Senior Research Engineer
* Member of a proof of concept team, with a focus on UNIX C++ applications. This included embedding a Perl interpreter within C++ to power the key “rules engine” of an application which responded to users’ activities and rules. Found that the standard way of embedding Perl within C++ caused memory leaks, and so alerted the Perl 5 development team. Received a company award for this work, which moved to product development funding, and promoted shortly afterwards.* Product development of optical Internet backbone network elements (switches, etc.). Learnt Java and supervised a student’s work on a multithreaded Java application. Participated in regular conference calls with Canadian colleagues and the US vendor of the Java Virtual Machine used.* Progressed work on Performance Monitoring (gathering various statistics on error rates, etc.), liaising with colleagues in the standards and other teams. Uncovered a limitation in the C header file “math.h”, whose error function broke down at the numbers required, and implemented a numerically equivalent, but computationally different, algorithm.
Administrative Assistant
Initially I processed claims for terminally ill people at the Leeds Disability Benefits Centre. Later I worked at Harlow Local Office, undertaking a range of tasks, and finally in the Fraud team, where I liaised with a number of agencies such as the Police.
