I was responsible for designing, configuring, testing and deploying two internal Pilot programs utilizing IBM Lotus Sametime Unified Telephony and Sametime Advanced Server to provide modern telephony communications and video enabled collaboration technology for internal consumption. I deployed these environments using SuSE/Xen and RedHat/KVM hypervisors to minimize space and power requirements. I utilized SAN storage and application clustering to provide for redundancy, capacity expansion and failover scenarios. I worked with development teams to eliminate bugs and release new features during beta and post product release. I personally identified 8 server side bugs previously unknown on the Linux platform, in total the Pilot team identified 104 bugs. I reported performance metrics to management and development teams. The team issued a “Lessons Learned” document to help Global Services deployment teams with customer configuration issues.

The primary role of this position was to provide security technical consulting to system owners and administrators. This included writing procedures for corporate requirements, providing security education and assistance in internal peer and audit reviews. These reviews focused on system auditing procedures, system security settings, security patch application, network penetration testing and ethical hacking. Additionally, I contributed code to a tool repository to help system administrators with corporate security requirements. The repository contained various Perl and UNIX shell scripts designed to automate security configurations, auditing, and patching of UNIX/Microsoft systems to corporate requirements. Other duties included participation in IT based projects for the department. I also wrote a Java based application to track the employee completion of a mandatory on-line training course.

I was also tasked with providing consulting services on various enterprise and integration projects within the Lotus brand, of which there were several: Andrew File System (AFS) Services, Samba to Windows Domain Authentication, IBM Tivoli Enterprise Framework (User Administration/Software Distribution/Access Control Facility), Intrusion Detection (Snort with MySQL) and UNIX System Tools Standardization across 250+ UNIX servers world-wide. Other duties during this time also included providing third level support for the Lotus Cambridge Data Center, specifically security related issues dealing with firewalls, ftp services (ftp.lotus.com) and email (lotus.com Sendmail domain).

My responsibilities were two fold; to research new and emerging technologies and to assist with the testing, planning and deployment of those technologies which met the necessary criteria of the department, school or University as a whole. I evaluated and deployed several key technologies, including multi-user Windows NT Server software from Citrix Technologies in combination with Microsoft Windows NT, with a primary emphasis on reducing the Total Cost of Ownership at the Office of Information Technology for 100+ staff. The University was interested in linking computer labs with Microsoft Windows PCs to the existing University Directory Service (DS), but the DS utilized Kerberos V4/V5 authentication mechanisms, which did not seamlessly integrate with Windows NT/2000. I worked with Residence Network Computing Staff in solving this and other platform issues for the eventual deployment of Microsoft Windows workstations in all computer labs utilizing Microsoft’s Systems Management Server for total environment control. I also wrote a Win32 Perl based Windows NT account management utility for Sargent College Computer Lab.My other duties included administration and maintenance of the IT departmental Microsoft Exchange Server in addition to the WINS (Windows Internet Naming Service) and DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) servers, which were the primary service providers on the Charles River Campus WAN (Wide Area Network). I was also one of several staff members responsible for primary personal computer support to the IT department of 100+ staff. Additionally, I was also responsible for automating manual paper based departmental processes. By creating custom FileMaker Pro databases, I was able to significantly reduce the amount of staff time spent on Student Payroll processing, Purchasing Form processing, Tutorial Registration, and University Guest Account tracking.

The primary job responsibility was to provide IBM PC and Apple Macintosh computer support for faculty, staff, and students at the Charles River Campus. Support included but was not limited to: computer software/hardware problem diagnosis over the phone and walk-ins, TCP/IP network installation assistance, dial-up modem assistance, etc. I also helped develop, write, and update courseware for mainstream Macintosh and Windows PC software packages. I was one of four full-time staff who taught hands-on classes in Microsoft Word, Excel, PageMaker, FileMaker and Internet/Communications related topics. The support center also provided advice on a wide range of computer topics, so to advise customers, I helped write and maintain documents on purchasing computer hardware and configuring network hardware and software. The support center also provided assistance with file recovery, graphics format and postscript/color printing conversion(s). Other duties included the administration and maintenance of Macintosh AppleShare, Novell Netware and Microsoft Windows NT servers for the support center. I also assisted in hiring and managing a twenty person student staff responsible for all walk-in/phone-in customer technical support.
