Lead Scientist / Senior Manager - Research And Clinical Studies

Toronto, Canada Area

Nov 2018 - Jul 2020

Postdoctoral Research Associate

My research examined the influence of experiential (e.g., natural rewards and aversive states) and pharmacological (e.g., drugs of abuse) interventions on psychological processes (e.g., stress, addiction, learning and memory, and affective states) by measuring behavioural and neurobiological responses. The goal of my research was to identify the molecular correlates associated with changes in behaviour and psychology, with the hope to identify, a) the positive and negative effects of exposure, b) the underlying neural mechanisms, c) potential therapeutic targets, and d) phenotypes/genotypes that are associated with vulnerability and resilience. To elucidate the mechanisms that mediate the effects of my manipulations, I utilized pharmacological agents (agonist, antagonists, inhibitors) directed at specific and localized targets.

May 2018 - Dec 2018

Instructor - Fundamentals Of Behavioural Neuroscience (Graduate-Level Course)

As course instructor, I created the format for the course, developed the syllabus, selected articles for discussion, and administered lectures. Lecture topics ranged from DNA, epigenetics, and human brain development to the neuroscience of emotion, perception, and attention. Students also learned about advanced techniques in neuroscience (e.g., qPCR, CRISPR, fMRI, DREADDs, TMS, etc) and discussed original research and opinion papers on current topics in the field. As course instructor, I was responsible for guiding discussions, marking presentations, and developing and grading tests.

As a Research Consultant, I helped the platform to develop and validate personality inventories that students could use to self-actualize and further their success. My role involved researching the theory and application of these tests and making recommendations regarding structure and content, so that students could gain accurate and useful information.

Jan 2017 - Apr 2017

Research Associate

In 2017, I was hired to consult on a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) grant application. My job was to research the theory and application of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and to provide advice on how to design a GWAS study to examine the genetic contribution to various psychiatric conditions (e.g., depression and suicidal behaviour). My contract afforded me the opportunity to learn and demonstrate mastery of subject matter that was unrelated to my doctorate work. The team of researchers were awarded a $1.43 million grant to conduct their research.
