Matthew’s specific project was to identify municipalities and/or governorates who could pilot methane capture systems, work with Iraqi Landfill Methane Capture Expert STTA to assess the feasibility of landfill methane capture at selected sites and which technologies and methods could be used with tentative action plans, noting any jurisdictions that have already incorporated lessons learned. This included a number of landfill site visits in Iraq and assessing them against Landfill Methane Capture criteria. -

Wrote a policy paper about collecting waste management and sanitation fees through the electricity bill in Afghanistan. Provided technical assistance to municipal staff to develop a public awareness campaign promoting the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and setting up at-source segregation in schools in Kabul working with informal recyclers.
