Initially employed on a three month contract but then further extended by a month, Matthew was employed to modify existing scale GUI software for a South African customer. As this was a multi-lingual customer it was important that translation criteria were satisfied.

I joined QBE as a contractor initially in development and then latterly moving over to application support supporting a legacy motor insurance system. This system was written in Progress 9.1D with the databases on a UNIX platform making heavy use of the Progress AppServer technology and was accessed via GUI, CHUI and WebClient interfaces. Having moved into a support role I successfully completed ITIL foundation.

In 2005 Fenland built a state-of-the art laundry within which the processing of garments is handled almost exclusively by software designed and written by Matthew. The laundry operates over three sites and so Matthew implemented the current system making use of the Progress AppServer and so the only permanent data is held at the parent site. Although the majority of the software for Fenland was written using Progress 4GL and third party OCXs, Matthew also made use of Visual Basic 6 and VB.NET, across to which the systems were being migrated. Matthew was also responsible for the DBA of the Progress databases ensuring that they were available on a 24/7 basis.

While at CDS Matthew helped design, write and implement a successful package of software for pathology departments in NHS hospitals. Although some of this was written for use on terminals using a CHUI interface the vast majority of the software was a GUI using the Progress supplied browsers, buttons and other tools. In addition to this Matthew was responsible for developing and maintaining a software toolset used by all the developers to ensure all windows had a common look and feel to them despite being written by different people.
