About Matthew Hancock, Ph.D.
I am a partner at Veryst Engineering, an engineering consulting firm based in Boston. I have an extensive background in fluid mechanics and microfluidics modeling and simulation, including wetting of textured surfaces, surface tension effects, heat and mass transfer, fluid-structure interaction, wave motion, and multiscale analysis. My approach to problem solving and design optimization involves a hierarchy of tools including scaling arguments, analytic techniques, lumped parameter models, and computational simulations. I have co-authored dozens of peer-reviewed research articles in journals such as Nature Materials, Lab on a Chip, Small, and Biomaterials. To date, my research has been cited more than 2500 times.I have worked in academic, medical, and industrial settings, both as project lead and as a model-based engineering consultant. Prior to joining Veryst Engineering, I was a Visiting Scientist at the Broad Institute of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, a postdoctoral research fellow at both Harvard Medical School and Pennsylvania State University, and a lecturer in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I received my Ph.D. in Environmental Fluid Mechanics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2005 and the Advanced Certificate for Executives in Management, Innovation and Technology (ACE) from the MIT Sloan School of Management in 2017.Specialties: Mathematical modeling and simulation for microfluidics, heat transfer, chemical/mass transport and mixing, self-assembly, surface tension effects, solid-fluid interaction, wave propagation; multiple scales analysis; numerical analysis.
