You might ask how one lands in healthcare with a background in political science. It wasn’t the career path I envisioned, but ultimately was a function of finding the window that opened when the door in front of me closed. My time playing football for Boise State served me well and ingrained in me the fundamentals of integrity, hard work, commitment, teamwork, accountability and excellence. There I would further develop my understanding of what it means to be a leader and how to handle adversity. It was also there that any hopes of continuing my football career ended suddenly following a lengthy rehab stint from a broken leg and a series of concussions.Having been stripped of my identity and unable to continue doing the one thing that defined me as a person, I was forced to reevaluate my life, my passions and who I wanted to become. It was through dealing with these events that I began helping others by speaking about my experiences, steering me to an opportunity to advocate for others through leading the passage of concussion legislation in Idaho. On the heels of that success I pivoted my career into healthcare by developing the education and outreach arm of the newly formed St. Luke’s Concussion Clinic. I often reflect on that time of my life and note that some of the best opportunities I’ve had emerged out of some of my most physically and mentally painful events. A series of unfortunate circumstances and adversity ultimately pushed me to grow and stretch my capabilities, and to find my calling in giving back to a community that supported me for so many years. It shaped me as a person, as a professional and as a servant leader.Whether it’s healthcare, politics, or some other field, I love to learn and crave a challenge to stretch my capabilities. With a foundation in business I believe my skill set and background to be translatable to many different opportunities, environments and businesses as I continually seek to grow and develop.
