Technology Consultant ("Slim-Bems"), Distributed Energy DivisionE.On Technologies Ltd. Aug 2015 - Jun 2016Nottingham, United KingdomThere was a business need for a simplified building energy management system (BEMS) at low cost, which could be offered to B2B clients with smaller premises where BEMS would not normally be cost effective.• Completed desktop evaluation; short listing of hardware systems to requirements spec; lab/bench testing to validate practical install and overall suitability; supplier meetings and procurement process (RFI/RFQ).• Developed the Slim-BEMS control strategy using custom E.ON control objects programed in Sedona and produced prototype UIs for pilot installations.• Designed and developed a wireless-hybrid control system, enabling the most cost-effective solution for the customer with favourable ROI durations.

Technology Consultant (Sub-Metering), Distributed Energy DivisionE.On New Build & Technology Aug 2014 - Mar 2016Nottingham, United KingdomE.ON wanted a sub-metering solution which could be retrofitted to the premises of B2B customers to enable a granular view of energy consumption in a building at the circuit level.Responsible for delivering this technology to the business:• Desktop evaluation of hardware devices available in the market. This was followed by further evaluation of shortlisted systems via supplier meetings and lab/bench testing, including various test rigs to validate practical installation, measurement accuracy and overall suitability of the systems.• In 3 weeks developed a prototype data logging arrangement comprising a Raspberry Pi using Python, with Modbus RTU/TCP communications to sub-metering equipment, logging data and uploading to an internal analysis platform. These prototypes were installed and tested alongside an intelligent lighting installation at a large business customer and provided data used to produce consumption heatmaps in MATLAB.• Presentation of results to senior business stakeholders and a follow on proposal to develop the prototype of preferred hardware solutions into an integrated customer product offering using cloud services and internet of things (IoT) techniques which would offer clients a low cost, easy install system.• Several sub-metering systems were installed at a large packing warehouse to monitor the performance of a large MW scale PV system coupled to a flow battery demonstration.

Product Owner, Crm Development, Distributed Energy DivisionE.On New Build & Technology Jan 2014 - Dec 2014Nottingham, United KingdomThe role of the Distributed Energy Division was originally to technically prove products and build the business case for putting them on the market. The role of the division was extended to include all activities around the market launch of new products. This included the need for a customer relationship management (CRM) system for managing technical trials, and commercial trials to support the marketing, sales and support activities of new product launches and tracking products and assets for service and in case of product recalls.• Responsibilities for specifying the system requirements in an IT deployment project which was to use a Scrum delivery process.• Role of product owner in an Agile based deployment of a customised CRM solution, ensuring the £100k+ resulted in a solution which was used in market launches, including a smart thermostat product.• Good experience of planning and implementing an IT system within the business using a scrum delivery process based around a 2 week sprint cycle.

Technology Consultant (Monitoring Engineer & Portfolio Manager), Field Trials & Testing TeamE.On New Build & Technology Ltd. Aug 2009 - Dec 2015Nottingham, United KingdomBuilt a new monitoring capability for Distributed Energy technical field trials providing the business with the ability to deliver end-to-end remote monitoring and analysis of the performance; operational characteristics; user interaction; and environmental conditions of technologies the company wanted to understand.Initially this was for a Stirling engine micro-CHP device. The flexibility of the system allowed it to be used for a wide variety of other field trials of products E.ON had interest in including:• Various air source heat pump systems• ICE/Fuel cell micro-CHPs• Solar thermal• Building fabric• Smart home controls• Intelligent lighting systems.• Led the UK part of a cross-border team during 2012 - 2014 and managed the project portfolio. • Successfully made the case for recruitment and led the process, writing role profiles, filtering applications, interviewing to recruit new team member. This provided the capacity to take on new monitoring projects and to develop the service improving reliability and adding new capabilities.• Required adaptability in order to understand electrical, gas and heat systems, along with different metering & sensing systems, communications systems and methods for data storage, analysis and reporting.• Devising and building monitoring designs based around a radio logging system including metering and sensing arrangements.• Remote data download, verification and storage in MySQL database, with data manipulation, analysis and reporting routines completed in MATLAB. Data analysis and reporting to a wide audience of different stakeholders.• Cost savings by redeploying monitoring hardware from one trial into the next and the business was also better able to manage new IP produced from field trials.• In 2014 led a consortium writing a bid for the analysis of RHI heat pump data for the DECC. The bid was well received resulting in a call to an interview at the DECC offices in London. E.ON's bid came in 2nd place.

Project Technical Officer, E.On International Research InitiativeE.On Engineering Ltd. / E.On New Build & Technology Ltd. Apr 2009 - Dec 2012Nottingham, United KingdomIn 2008 E.ON commenced a programme, with annual investment rounds, into various research projects in energy related topics at European academic institutions. The progress and output of the projects needed to be monitored so that E.ON could: • derive the maximum intellectual property value possible; • ensure that the projects were delivering against the initial objectives; • ensure delivery against the agreed project plans.Project technical officer (PTO) responsible for three projects based across Denmark, Sweden, Germany and France. The task of the PTO was challenging because it required good understanding of differing research fields in order to evaluate progress and disseminate useful and interesting findings. Additional challenges ensuring the institutes provided reporting to the time schedules and quality defined in the funding contracts. Two of the projects focussed on aspects of battery research for energy storage systems. The third project was around the fabrication of nanowires for use in light emitting and solar harvesting (PV) devices.
