Information Technology SpecialistChuuk Department Of Education Sep 2015 - Sep 2016Chuuk, MicronesiaAfter my initial year in Micronesia, I was awarded a $500,000 grant to integrate technology in schools throughout the state and develop a blended learning environment which would provide educational tools which were not previously available. The Chuuk school district consists of 74 schools scattered across dozens of islands. Chuuk High School, which is the largest school in the state with an enrollment of 1200 students, was used as a pilot school for this process. By creating local content & proxy servers, we were able to use Moodle, Khan Academy, Wikipedia, Student Information Systerms and countless other resources for the first time. I taught three pilot classes in order to test the usefulness of technology in ESL classrooms, and focused on how to use these tools in the most effective manner. After promising results with the classes, I expanded the pilot program by installing a campus wide wireless network and ordered 800 Chromebooks and 300 Kindles for use at the high school. Teacher training and content creation quickly became the focus, while also gradually expanding the program to other schools in the district.Solar panels, printers and laptops were purchased and issued to each of the 74 schools in the district. Each laptop was preloaded with all of the educational resources that had been compiled, and preliminary training was performed with the school principals. Line of site surveys were done for each of the schools in order to roll out a large scale wireless area network. I worked closely with the local IT company throughout my time in Chuuk and regularly kept them informed of the progress of the pilot program. As my time in Chuuk came to an end, I ensured that they were completely up to speed, and would be able to take over the program after my departure.

High School Teacher & It SpecialistChuuk High School Jul 2013 - May 2014Chuuk, MicronesiaI went to Chuuk as a volunteer to teach math and science at the local high school, but quickly transitioned to a roll as the IT Specialist in addition to teaching. The school initially had limited resources available, but I was able to show what a valuable tool technology could be if used properly. Using a classroom set of tablets, which were donated, and a local content server, I was able to begin using the tablets in the classroom. Setting up a digital library enabled the tablets to be used as eReaders in literature classes. Khan Academy was used in the math classes, and an offline Wikipedia database allowed students to do research projects for the very first time. This small, but successful use of technology in the classroom resulted in a much larger effort to use technology throughout the school district. Over the next year a $500,000 grant was awarded, and a significant portion of the budget for the school district was put towards continuing the project.
