About Matthew Hale

Dr. Matthew Hale is an Associate Professor of Cybersecurity at University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) in the School of Interdisciplinary Informatics, College of Information Science and Technology. Dr. Hale received his PhD from the University of Tulsa (TU) where he worked with the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) on the creation of formal certification tools to provide information assurance capabilities to cloud-based information systems in a way that spans federal government and private regulatory documents. This work produced a formal verification language called Cloud X-UNITY and an interchangeable XML Schema for Security SLA specification called SecAgreement. His current research interests lie at the intersection of security and software engineering with specific focuses on building and testing secure web services, mobile applications, and wearables. Since joining UNO in 2014, Dr. Hale has won several competitive research grants to investigate attack vectors in hybrid mobile applications, identify and mitigate consumer wearable security issues in the internet of things, and conduct cybersecurity STEM outreach events. He also has a current research project, called CyberTrust, focused on exploring the psychology of phishing, identifying behavioral and structural antecedents of trust, and providing targeted personalized training to prevent future victimization. In his spare time, Dr. Hale enjoys a love of cooking - which he thinks isn't all that different from software engineering (e.g. components, connectors, and patterns), disc golfing, and tabletop games.

Listed skills include Python, Mathematica, Software Engineering, Jquery, and 25 others.

Post Doctoral Research Fellow

Tulsa, Oklahoma Area

I'm continuing work on the Cybertrust testing Platform for measuring biomarkers of trust in different populations and targeting specific forms of feedback for improving the recognizance of suspicious content. The goal is a world slightly less impacted by things like phishing schemes and malicious web sites.

May 2014 - Aug 2014

Lead Designer And Programmer, Cybertrust Testing Platform

I designed a high level architecture for a testing platform as part of the Cybertrust and Suspicion initiative, a multi-phase study to better understand what factors contribute to whether or not individuals trust content in online environments (email, website, social media, etc). Cybertrust is funded by a US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) grant. The testing platform is designed to simulate a real-work business ecosystem where the subject is in charge of making collections of business and personal decisions (such as business-to-business transactions, partnerships, and communications). My design allows researchers to provide the subjects with specific trust stimuli and then captures all of the subject's responses and actions. The goal of the platform is to augment FMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) studies and specifically identify the trust cues and factors that go into individual trust decisions.I'm currently implementing the platform as a RESTful web service using a combination of node.js, express.js, and mongoDB (server side) and ember.js (clientside).

May 2013 - May 2014

Graduate Researcher / Woobank Fellow
