As the CEO of The Wildflower Foundation, Matt Kramer supports a fast-growing network of one-room, teacher-led, community-embedded Montessori schools. Wildflower schools can serve children as young as 12 weeks old up through high school, with most schools serving a 3-year age band. The Wildflower Foundation supports the social entrepreneurship of educators to create and operate their own micro-schools, helps them access public funding to serve intentionally diverse groups of students, and supports teacher observation to enable data-driven instruction in a child-centered prepared environment without the use of screens or tests to gather data. The Wildflower network uses non-hierarchical management practices based on the ideas found in Reinventing Organizations by Frederic Laloux.Matt is a Montessori alum, a Montessori parent, and previously chaired the board of a Montessori charter school in Minneapolis. Before joining The Wildflower Foundation, he spent a decade as President and then Co-CEO at Teach For America, where he helped recruit, train, and support thousands of teachers and leaders who work to expand educational opportunity and equity. He also has a background in management consulting, having previously worked as a partner at McKinsey & Company. He holds a B.A. in economics from Harvard University and lives in the Twin Cities area with his wife, two daughters, two dogs, and one bunny.

Each school serves one of the typical Montessori 3 year age bands – 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12, etc. The schools are human-sized: the same two educators both teach and make administrative decisions, parents are engaged, and students can be truly known. They serve a diverse population of students, and are funded through a variety of models - as charters, in districts, and through a blend of tuition and childcare subsidy programs. Our relationship to the schools will be as a support and facilitator, not manager, with the teachers leading as social entrepreneurs. At Wildflower Labs, we're also developing exciting technology embedding sensors in Montessori materials and applying artificial intelligence techniques to develop insights about who is using what, how they are using it, what they are learning and where they are struggling - to support personalization without kids sitting in front of computers.
