River Restoration Design Engineer
CurrentWhile working for Stantec, I've had the opportunity to design and assess rivers across the United States, including projects in Colorado, California, Minnesota, Texas, and Tennessee.
Water Resources Engineer
As an engineer with WSSI, I was responsible for all phases of stream stabilization and restoration design, including hydrologic modeling and analysis, channel and sediment sizing, stream assessment and monitoring, construction access, structure placement, planting plans, and erosion and sediment controls.
Youth And Community Development Specialist
As a volunteer with the Peace Corps in Morocco I worked on a variety of projects - from one on one English tutoring to the design of a water well system that would provide clean drinking water to over 500 community members. See my attached Description of Service for more details.
Adjunct Water Engineering Instructor And Designer
My duties in this position were split between designing and teaching. On the design side, my main accomplishment was the design and construction of a flashboard riser system that is now being used for research on floodplain nutrient retention. On the teaching side, I led laboratory sessions for a graduate level Soil and Water Engineering Course. Subject material included TR-55 and HEC-RAS hydrologic modeling software as well as stream survey and data analysis techniques.
Graduate Fellow
My graduate studies focused on developing an understanding of the drivers of stream equilibrium state in urban settings. The objectives were to:1.) Create a geomorphology based dynamic equilibrium evaluation index that could determine the equilibrium state of a stream without the use of the bankfull stage, and;2.) Determine the key landscape factors that cause a stream to be in or out of equilibrium. Results showed that watersheds with large amounts of recent or total urban area would result in streams that were out of equilibrium but that positive landscape features such as a wide adjustment area and a well-connected floodplain could mitigate the urban effects.
Research Assistant
As a Research Assistant at Ohio State I conducted geomorphology surveys on Ohio agricultural ditches and small headwater streams, collected and evaluated soil data, and assisted with teaching geomorphology data collection, hydrology data analysis, and professional report writing for a Soil and Water Engineering course. This position, my first in the stream restoration field, was what lit the spark that led me to pursue a career in fluvial restoration.
Environmental Policy Intern
With the Office of Environmental Services at ODOT I managed sections of the ODOT ArcGIS database, created GIS maps, conducted Environmental Site Assessments for ODOT properties across Ohio, and performed quality assurance reviews of hazardous waste, superfund, and other environmental reports.
