Elected as Chief of Staff for 600 physicians at Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital, a 300 bed tertiary care facility providing advanced cardiac and vascular care. Chair of the Professional Behavior Committee, Credentials Committee, Moderate Sedation Committee and Wellbeing Committee

Recognizing physician and nurse burnout as a nationwide problem, this committee was recently created at St. Mary's Hospital with a goal to measure the level of burnout using the Maslach Burnout Inventory and create programs targeted to assist physicians and nurses who may feel burned out. With an emphasis on well being and a more team centered approach to patient care, this committee is designed to help caregivers manage their lives and positively handle stress.

Assist the nursing staff with pre-operative testing and preparation. Serve as an expert on protocols and strengthen service lines through patient education. Maintain a standardized approach to pre-operative testing and support other physicians in this role.

Provide medical leadership and guidance for the BOD and present monthly credentialing and quality reports.

Objectively enforce the Professional Behavior Policy for the medical staff.

Together with the OR Director, develop and manage monthly working meetings in a collaborative atmosphere with both surgeons, nurses and anesthesiologists to work on block scheduling, staffing, budget and safety issues along with the goal of providing more efficient care.

Provide both 2 and 4 week clinical clerkships for medical students with a focus on anesthesia.

Provide 4 week clinical clerkship rotations.

SAA developed a quality committee approximately three years ago to develop a method to measure metrics within SAA. As a member of the committee, and as Chair of the Department of Anesthesia, I helped develop metrics used by QA Stats, LLC.

Reviewed medical school applicant files, personal statements, conducted interviews and made recommendations and discussed medical student candidates at monthly meetings.

I worked with my research mentor, Dr. C. Spencer Yost and his lab on investigations into the mechanism of action for volatile anesthetics using a technique of expressing tandem pore potassium gated ion channels on Xenopus Laevis oocytes, two electrode voltage clamps and a measurement of voltage differences across the cell membrane with varying concentrations of volatile anesthetics. This research concluded with two papers over the course of three years of work:• TWIK-2, a new weak inward rectifying member of the tandem pore potassium channel family.
