Profile bio

About Matthew Moggridge

I am a professional magazine editor, business conference organiser and blogger with experience across a number of industry sectors including property, shipping, computers, the UK foodservice industry, the UK leisure industry, foreign direct investment, fine dining, international food processing and the licensed trade. I also have first hand experience of magazine publishing. Between 2015 and 2016, while employed by Quartz Business Media, my current employer, I developed and launched the Future Steel Forum conference. The event is concentrated on future technologies and trends affecting the global steel industry, in particular Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things, Cyber Physical Systems, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The first Future Steel Forum launched in 2017 in Warsaw and has been very successful, prompting Quartz Business Media to replicate the event for the aluminium industry in the shape of the Future Aluminium Forum in 2018. It was also replicated as a Glass International event as part of the magazine's Glassman exposition and convention. In 2020, the Future Steel Forum embarks upon its fourth year, and the Future Aluminium Forum on its third.I have since devised another conference, the Sustainable Steel Strategies Summit, and have worked extensively on developing webinars to complement the editorial output of the magazine, of which there are now 12 issues/year.In other roles prior to joining Quartz Business Media I have been involved in developing, selling and organising sponsored events and playing a leading ‘on-stage’ role at live awards presentations.I am an experienced and versatile writer and blogger with magazine publishing experience.

Listed skills include Publishing, Magazines, Editorial, Journalism, and 46 others.

Editor, Steel Times International

Current

Redhill, United Kingdom

Editor of a leading global steel industry title. Travelling extensively around the globe covering conferences and interviewing key senior level personnel from within the steel plants and those heading up the organisations supporting the industry. The job entails everything you might expect from a senior role and also embraces conference organising and regular appearances on national television and radio – especially recently following the announcement that Tata Steel plans to pull out of the UK.I have also developed a brand new conference – Future Steel Forum – which is all about Industry 4.0 and steel production. It was my idea, I developed the programme, found all the speakers and brought the whole thing together and Quartz Business Media has since made the decision to replicate the concept across both the aluminium (Future Aluminium Forum) and glass industries (Future Glass Forum). The inaugural Future Steel Forum event took place in Warsaw, Poland (14-15 June 2017) and was a resounding commercial and professional success. Visit https://www,futuresteelforum.com for more information and registration details. In addition to the Future Steel Forum, I have also developed the Sustainable Steel Strategies Summit, an online conference about the decarbonisation of the steelmaking. The inaugural event takes place 22-23 June 2021.

Feb 2008 - Mar 2011

Group Editor

Crier Media Group

Group editor in charge of the market leading European Baker, Potato Processing International, Asia Pacific Baker, Biscuit World. My role was to co-ordinate all four titles. I had sole responsibility for European Baker and Potato Processing International and oversaw the publication of both Asia Pacific Baker and Biscuit World, both of which were located in Budapest. As Group Editor, I was tasked with determining the editorial direction and structure of the magazines. I travelled the world to conduct interviews and write features for the publications under my control and was also responisible for chairing an international convention.

Jan 2007 - Feb 2008

Publisher And Editor/Writer

Mjm Publishing Plus Freelance Work

Publisher and Editor of Foodservice Forum, a 68-page quarterly magazine, which I conceived and launched in November 2004. I enjoyed sole commercial and editorial control of the title. The concept – a ‘cross-sector’ magazine addressed to senior executives and buyers in all areas of the foodservice industry was warmly welcomed by readers as it provided management and practitioners with a much-needed meeting place to exchange ideas and information about food hygiene, branding, marketing, nutritional care and so on. I was fortunate lead a talented trio - designer, photographer and printer - which did a fine job. • Greatest achievement: developing and launching the title, seeking and finding commercial backing for it and then sustaining it for the best part of two years.(2) Freelance editor of Hospitality – the official magazine of the Hotel & Catering International Management Association (HCIMA) and now the Institute of Hospitality. I was the re-launch editor. (3) Freelance editor of three food processing industry magazines – the monthly European Baker; the bi-monthly Potato Processing International; and the quarterly Asia Pacific Baker. I also had overall editorial control of Biscuit World, another bi-monthly title with a journalistic team based in Eastern Europe. Ultimately, I was offered and accepted a full-time role with the company.(4) Marketing and PR activities I pitched for and won a PR contract for two leading food manufacturers – Capespan and Superior Food Ltd and organised a retail and foodservice press launch for a new and revolutionary fresh fruit product.

Nov 2004 - Jan 2007

Editor, Hotel & Restaurant

Quantum Publishing

Published by Quantum Business Media, Hotel & Restaurant had a monthly, national circulation of 18,000 and, as its title suggests, it is aimed at both hoteliers and restaurateurs. My role as editor was very much ‘hands on’. As well as the usual editorial/management duties, it involved a great deal of travel at home and abroad to research and write features on hotels and restaurants and interview prominent industry personalities. Another important element of the job was the ambassadorial role one must expect to perform as an editor. This involved speaking at dinners, lunches and conferences.

May 2001 - Nov 2004

Editor, Pub Caterer

Quantum Publishing

Published by Quantum Business Media. I was invited by publisher Sean Ferris to edit this title that was published 10 times a year. In addition to introducing a livelier design and editorial stance, I was responsible for attracting over £370,000 of ‘below-the-line’ sponsorship revenue through the development and organisation of a series of national catering events, including the Pub Food Awards.

Mar 1995 - Mar 2001

Writer/Editor

Freelance Journalism And Public Relations Work

In this period I was able to pick up a variety of commissions, mainly from the food sector, including Caterer & Hotelkeeper, The Grocer, Hospitality, Forecourt Trader, Pub Food, Independent Caterer and Toyota Today. I also took on some public relations work; I was responsible for the UK catering press launch of German catering equipment company, Weisheu Wiwa, and I was retained as a media consultant by Brasilia UK, a supplier of espresso coffee systems. During this period, I was appointed editor of World Markets in 1995, published in London by Headway, Home & Law. The publication was allied to the World Economic Development Congress held in Madrid prior to the IMF/World Bank meetings. The job entailed commissioning papers from international trade and finance ministers, editing them and seeing the entire job through to publication.

Mar 1994 - Mar 1995

Editor, The Leisure Manager

Argus Business Publications

This monthly magazine was contract-published by Industrial Trade Press (ITP), a division of what was Argus Business Publications in Redhill, Surrey. It is the official journal of the Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management (ILAM) that was established in 1983. This was a bit of a one-man show where I did it all – subbing, news and feature writing, passing pages at the printers and travelling extensively throughout the UK covering seminars, conferences and exhibitions.

Jun 1991 - Feb 1994

Editor, Pub Food

As editor of this Reed monthly devoted to the UK’s £4 billion pub catering industry, my responsibilities included the editorial direction of the magazine; managing a team of two journalists and supporting staff; commissioning and briefing freelance contributors, artists and photographers; promoting the aims and identity of the magazine among the licensed trade and representing the magazine at national and regional trade functions and on the judging panel of food competitions. From time-to-time I was interviewed on television and radio to discuss major issues affecting the pub catering industry and spoke at award ceremonies.
