About Matthew Ovington
I have over 20 years of experience in design leadership, people management, UX research, product design and change management. I have worked at director level for more than a decade. I have a track record of success in making teams and organisations more customer-centric and outcome orientated. Some of my strengths include: - Turning around underperforming products by helping product teams become more focused on customer outcomes - Providing design leadership in organizations where there traditionally hasn't been much - and improving design maturity throughout the org - Creating a culture where designers and researchers can thrive and reach their full potential - Building diverse, distributed design teams (most recently at Travelport) - Integrating UX design with functions like product management, engineering, and marketing - Leading organizational change by making the UX team the go-to place for great workshop facilitation in the organizationI've worked in B2C (PaddyPower) and B2B (Travelport). I enjoy product and design strategy work the most, but it's not the work you get to do most often. I always try to put myself in the other person's shoes and see things from their perspective. It's what makes me an effective collaborator and facilitator.I've spoken at several conferences and events. I do it to get out of my comfort zone. I seldom do the same talk twice and make sure to keep it real. I think audiences appreciate that as I always get lots of questions and audience engagement. Some talks are listed below:Creating a Design Organisation from the Inside OutVenice, Dubai, and Shanghai - Travelport Live Change is the only constant.IxDA Dublin Elevating design teamsDublin UX Evolving design maturityDublin UXTraining courses I've attended that have helped me in my career include:Facilitation skills training: Making meetings work - 2 Day Course (Meeting Magic)https://meetingmagic.co.uk/Masterclass in Data Visualization - 2 Day Course (Visualizing Data Ltd)https://visualisingdata.comLean UX for Agile Teams - 1 Day Course (Jeff Gothelf)https://jeffgothelf.com/all-courses/UX Strategy Playbook - 2 Day Course (Jared Spool)https://dev.uie.com/Continuous Discovery Habits - Self Paced (Teresa Torres)https://learn.producttalk.org/cdh-master-classUX Intensive (Strategy, Research, Service Design, Interaction Design) - 4 Day Course (Adaptve Path)Not longer availableAdvanced Negotiating Skills (Irish Management Institute)https://www.imi.ie/product/advanced-negotiation-skills/

Vp Of Product Design
Current
Director Of Ux (Global)
I was responsible for leading Travelport’s global design team in Europe and North America. I joined Travelport a few years after they acquired MTT (Mobile Travel Technologies). MTT was acquired by Travelport, a GDS (Global Distribution System) in June 2015. I was promoted to Director of UX, with global responsibility, in September 2018.My main responsibility was to to plan and see through the execution of our product design strategy.I delivered a programme of work to better integrate design practices across the entire business. These included:• Introducing the company to collaborative product management and design methods including customer journey mapping, service design, setting and gathering experience metrics and story mapping.• Moving to 100% cloud-based tooling (Figma & Mural with Jira integration) to enable easier cross-team and distributed team collaboration.• Establishing a strong user research function within Travelport. • Developing a global design system (atlas.travelport.com) in line with our new corporate identity.• Creating an online customer community forum to enable product management to better engage with different customer types (using Alida)• Leading on integrating design within the SAFe (Scaled Agile) Framework.• Designing multiple, award winning apps. Most recently in 2019 the team that design and develop the easyJet app won “Best Airline App in the World” at the World Aviation Festival.
Director Of User Experience
I led a team of designers and researchers at MTT, and later Travelport Digital, building award winning mobile apps for some of the worlds greatest airlines. Our customers include Singapore Airlines, Etihad, easyJet, Copa, BCD Travel and LATAM Airlines. MTT was acquired by Travelport.
Director Of Product Design
I led the Product Design team at Paddy Power. The 20-strong company team comprised product design managers, UX architects, UI designers and UX researchers. The Product Design function was established in mid-2014 from the pre-existing UX and UIteams. The formation required new role definitions, transitioning the team to agile, disestablishing the companies "agency" model andupdating our work practices and processes to align with agile product teams.I devised our strategy to improve our mobile experience across all mobile apps.I initiated and developed UX design principles and guidelines for mobile. I established our design style guides and pattern libraries to address multi-channel product fragmentation and improve product cross-sell. This reduced the lead time for eGaming product delivery from 12+ months to 3 months.I established the teams first UX knowledgebase to disseminate customer insight across the organisation. This was successful in supporting on-boarding new starts in UX and as a repository for team methodologies and processes.I am proud to work at PaddyPower - they were a real Irish success story and a fantastic brand. The thing I am most proud of in PaddyPower was the re-launch of the PaddyPower sportsbook app a few months after I left. This was, and still is, a product that turns over €1bn a year. The product was an immediate hit with customers and garnered a 5 star rating in the app store in a matter of days.
