About Matthew Phipps

I am a partner and the group head of the biotech equity research team at William Blair. My coverage focuses on oncology, immunology, and cardio-renal diseases, spanning from small cap to large cap.I received my BS in Physics in Medicine from the University of Notre Dame, followed by a PhD from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in Cellular and Molecular Physiology. While at UAB, I was selected as a Howard Hughes Med-to-Grad fellow and received a graduate level certificate in translational and molecular sciences.After completing my dissertation, I began a postdoctoral fellowship under Dr. Harry Kim at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. My research focused on using clinical data, animal models, and in vitro experiments to gain a better understanding of and design new treatments for Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, a debilitating hip condition caused by ischemic osteonecrosis of the femoral head in pediatric patients. We evaluated various methods of pharmaceutical intervention, including promoters of osteogenesis and inhibitors of inflammation, to alter the course of the disease.
